除了手动式的中文打字机，还有电子中文打字机。一般印刷公司都是用这类型的电子中文打字机。电子中文打字机的捡字方式仍然没有变，只是捡字方式变成了用电子笔在一个超大型的键盘上按键。每个按键代表一个中文字，只有半公方丁方。字型是记录在一张微型的底片上，再利用光学技术投射在一张俗称「咪纸」的感光纸上。早期的电子打字机是由日本发明生产的，所以其中的铅字是按日语发音来排列。后期亦有按笔划排的，但字型大多数亦是日体汉字。最初的形式为一个约一张A2大小的盘上，排满了铅字。铅字的排列次序跟报馆的习惯一样，按部首画数排列。打字员首先要在铅字盘上用一个小钳把铅字钳起，再按一键时，小钳就会举起铅字，隔著色带印在纸上。中文的特色，在于打字机能够配合当时中国人书写习惯，允许文字打直排。当打完一行按回车键之後，又会自动卷回页首，并跳往下一行。
由于中文打字机的操作并不容易，要捡字也很困难，当时一般人还是用手抄或。在1960年代的香港，只有比较富裕的学校才有能力负担一位能操作中文打字机的打字员。直到1990年代，由于微电脑的普及，使中文印刷变得更容易，中文打字机亦退出历史的舞台。随著微电脑的普及，令采用「」的小键盘式电子打字机变得可能。然而，以当时的电脑技术，要列印中文字还是很困难。在1980年代中期，香港作家与内地生产商合作制成一部用笔描绘汉字的手提中文打字机。这在当年的技术来说，是一个很大的突破。一个键盘所能记录的汉字有限，但打字键盘不能无限量扩大。所以后来有「」的发明，从而使键盘的面积大大缩少。当有需要使用罕用字时，打字员需要转换打字键盘的文字。这一块记载著打字键盘的文字，就是「字面」。直到现在「字面」这个术语仍然在电脑界中使用。
