let的基本意思是允许对方照其意思而行,引申可表示“出租”“放掉,松掉”等。用于数学中通常表示“假设”。
let用作及物动词作“出租”解时,可接名词或代词作宾语,也可接双宾语,其间接宾语可以转化为介词to的宾语;作“让,使”解时,通常接以形容词或不带to的动词不定式充当补足语的复合宾语;接动词不定式作宾语补足语时,如用于被动结构, to须保留。let还可接不带to的动词不定式作宾语,这时主要用于某些固定搭配中。
let用作不及物动词时主要表示“出租”,主语通常为物(如房子等),其主动形式含有被动意义。
在口语中, let常用于祈使句中表示建议、请求、命令、警告等;在书面语中,可用allow代替let。
关于let能否用于被动结构的问题,语法学家看法不尽一致：Quirk认为let接以不带to的动词不定式充当宾语补足语时,不能用于被动结构(make可用于被动结构);Hornby认为let作allow解时不可用于被动结构。但在《朗文现代英汉双解词典(1988)》和《新英汉词典》中却有用于被动结构的例证。对此,笔者认为let作allow解时还是不用于被动结构,而改用allow为好。
let's的否定形式在美国非正式语体中可说let's don't。例如:Let's don't forget.让我们别忘了。
let you and me当然是正确的,但在口语中,也可以说let you and I。后者通常把you and I当作整体看待。例如:Let you and I do it right now!咱们俩马上就干吧!
let偶尔也可用作名词,在法律用语中,意为“阻碍”或“妨碍”;在网球或其他类似运动中,意为“触网而过之球”,须重发。

allow指“允许某人做…”,给予客体执行某任务的权力,或同意某人的要求,和permit同义。它们在许多场合中可以通用。不过两者的意思也有细微差别, allow的意思是“允许”,表示主体有权不阻止、不妨碍或默许某事进行的意思。例如：
Playing ball is not allowed in the park.公园内不许打球。
Parking is not allowed here.此处不准停车。
permit表示给予客体做某事的权力。例如：
Time does not permit me to stay longer.时间不容许我在这里多留一会。
let含有放任的意味。例如：

2.permit 后可接不定式和动名词,但不可接名词从句; let不用动名词作宾语,其宾语后接动词原形。

permit是书面语,比allow带有更庄重、正式的语言色彩,含有正面的、积极的意义,指“同意某人的要求、给予某人做…的权力”。例如：

这组词的共同意思是“租”“租用”“雇用”。其区别是：
1.就租进、租出来说, let是租出, rent和hire则既可以是租进,也可以是租出。例如:
Will you rent me your boat for the weekend?小船租给我度周末好吗?
The house lets for 80 yuan a month.这房子出租,租金一个月80元。
2.就租期长短来说, hire强调临时性, let强调长期性,而rent既可以是长期的,也可以是临时的。例如:
During the holidays we hired a boat and went fishing.假期我们租了一条船去钓鱼。
We're hoping to let this field.我们希望把这块地租出去。
She rents out rooms to students.她把房间出租给学生。
3.就宾语来说, hire多用于对人的雇用, let和rent则着重于租物。例如:

4.hire在表示租某物时,在英国,一般指租汽车、船只等; let指出租房屋、地产; rent在英式英语中指较长时间租入或租出房屋、商店或土地,在美式英语中可指长时间或短时间租用各类资本或日用品,这一意义现已影响到英国。例如:

:let常用词，用于各种非正式场合，语气最弱，指允许或无力阻止某事，暗示漠不关心或听之任之。
:permit正式用词，在多数场合可与allow换用，语义最强，指准许某人做某事，含权威或正式的意味。
:leave侧重不加干涉。
:authorize语气最强，指权威性的允许与认可。
