Goodbye in many languages
These are phrases you use when parting from others. In some languages those
leaving and those staying each use different phrases. The English word goodbye
comes from the Old English God &ē mid sīe, which
means "God be with you".
Glossary of abbreviations: frm = formal, inf = informal, sg = singular (said

30年没有再见我的大学老师Strother 夫妇（Joe and Earlene Strother）。
印象中他们是虔诚、和善、真诚、教学认真、平等对待每个学生。 在大学期间得到第一本英文New Testament 《新约》 和John&s Gospel 《约翰福音》。
2008年8月大学毕业二十年聚会，在外文学院任教的田鹏同学给了他们的联络上方式。
Joe Strother 先生的父母（Greene and Martha Strother） 上个世纪20年代到中国传教， 1925 年到1948年（Joe Strother 先生当年15岁，随母亲回美国），先后在毫州和郑州、开封、后来由回到毫州、上海、南京等地侍奉主耶稣的经历。收养孤儿，开办学校教授英语等课程，去各地巡回讲座，兴建教堂。对很多当地人在生活帮助和精神上指引。我相信，灾难深重的旧中国，人们是需要他们的。
这是我在Twilight In China& （by Martha Strother ）读到的， 2001年由大学同学张帆翻译成中文版《曙光在中国》。

Old Men and Their Boats
The boats rock gently in the breeze, moored to their posts after a day on the water.
The old men, too, rock gently on porches, in dens, recounting their day to one another, swapping stories, secrets, and observations.
The boats are aged and weathered, but sturdy, for they were built by men who cared, who knew their life might depend on the evenness of a keel, the hold of a peg.
The old men, too, are aged, for the sea is not kind to those who make their living from it.& Dark, leathery skin, scarred hands, hands that could tell stories by themselves.& The men, too, they have lived hard but well.
The boats look the same, but each is unique, each owner carving niches, forming shelves, placing hooks, so that each boat reflects the owner&s nuances and habits.& An oar is just at hand if needed.
The men know their boats by heart, every response, every movement interpreted.& They reach for things without looking, confident it will be there.
The boats rock at their moorings.& The men rock in their chairs, talking to each other, but looking, always looking at their boats.
老人和他们的船
小船在微风中轻轻摇动，结束一天的漂泊，停靠在它们的木桩上。

I looked over each poem and changed some letters to capitals, added endings, etc. that make it less awkward but not changing meaning.& Some words I could not understand, so I asked questions on some of the poems and& you can try to find out what words the poet was trying to convey.&

Your poem is absolutely wonderful.& It is easy to understand and the English is very nice.& I like it very much.
&About the title. . . we would normally say,&& &Grand Canyon of the Colorado&.&& When you say& Grand Canyon Colorado&, it&s like you&re naming a place in Colorado or saying that the canyon is in Colorado.& Especially, &since there is a less famous canyon IN Colorado. A native English speaker would think you have the location incorrect, as we did.
&We would make more mistakes if we were trying to write in Chinese!!!& Hope you understand why we thought as we did!
&I&ll try to get some of the poems back to you in a day or two.
I had some time today and will be busy for the next few days, so I worked on the poems.
You&ll have to print them off and look at each one to see the changes and notes I wrote to you.
Sometimes, it&s difficult to determine the use of capital letters at the beginning of the lines.& It&s probably better just to be consistent and always capitalize them.
I tried to make things easier for an English speaking person to read and not change any meaning.& If I did so, you can change it back.

It&s so good to hear from you. Sounds as if you have been very busy.
We helped to edit a research paper for a science professor from Xian recently.& Mr. Zhou had sent it to us and asked for help.
We are doing fine.& We&ve had a lot of very cold, icy weather and have not been able to go up and down our mountain for a week.& We have plenty of food and are warm.& We&ve been reading a lot.
Hope your friends（注，我在给他们的信中提到林岩和晓锋将在美国讲学一年） will enjoy being in the states. &Maryland is a pretty state and she will be able to visit Washington DC easily. &Unfortunately, it is a good distance from Georgia.

Death Has Been Swallowed up in Victory
1st Corinthians 15:54
Does the Lord speak directly to us? In 1980, our only child, a nineteen year old, was killed in an auto accident. In our grief and pain, my wife and I never questioned God or blamed Him. We knew our son was a Christian and was with Him.
One night, two months later, I was walking in the yard. A voice in my mind said clearly, &He lives&! We all talk to ourselves and know our own voices. This was no my voice. The wonderful&& peace and assurance that came from those two words was overwhelming. I told my wife of the experience and she , too, had a comparable one. In her grief, walking in the house, she felt &someone& give her a physical hug.
Of course, our pain continued, but we both received greatly added strength. Additionally, we renewed our faith in a loving Lord who heals the broken hearted. What a mighty God we serve!

Almost nineteen &I told him goodbye

当时读起来，仿佛感觉Strother 先生就要离开，或许可能已经不在了。但是作为一种精神力量，30年来他从来没有离开过，也永远不会离开。

If there is nothing beyond the grave, the pattern of nature is stunningly incomplete.
This body of evidence shows that as people approach death, many sense they are coming not to the end of existence but to the beginning of another journey.
Each of us experiences what King Solomon called &eternity in our hearts&, ( Ecclesiastes 3:11). Only when he returned to his confidence in a final judgment and afterlife could he find something large enough to satisfy his longings for significance ( Ecclesiastes 12:14)
如果没有来世，自然的轮回方式一定很不完整；
很多证据显示，人们接近死亡时，大多感觉不是存在的结束而是另一个旅程的开始；

Joseph and Earlene Strother
Joseph, the son of Southern Baptist missionaries, grew up in Anhwei Province, China ().&
He is a widely exhibited artist with paintings shown in over 50 National Juried Exhibitions.& He has had 12 one-man shows of his work.& He is also a published poet.& His forty year teaching experience includes the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the University of Georgia, where he received his MA and Ed D degrees.& He retired as Professor Emeritus after serving for 20 years as Director of the School of Art and Architecture at Louisiana Tech University.
Earlene has taught in public schools of Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina, and Georgia. She received her BA degree from Louisiana College and an MA from Louisiana Tech University with further graduate study at the University of Georgia. She worked with teacher education programs at University of North Carolina, University of Georgia, and Louisiana Tech University.
Earlene and Joseph have taught English to English majors at Xian Jiaotong University ( and ).& They also taught English to PhD candidates at the The Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing in .
The Strothers are retired and currently reside in Clayton, Georgia

年他在中国安徽度过童年。
其绘画作品曾参加国家级展览五十多次，并举办个人展览十二次。发表过诗歌多首。从事教学四十年，曾在北卡罗莱纳州大学格林斯博罗分校及佐治亚大学任教，并获得管理硕士和教育博士学位。后任路易斯安那理工大学艺术与建筑学院院长二十年，退休后获荣誉教授称号。
伊蕾妮曾在路易斯安那、马里兰、北卡罗莱纳和佐治亚州等公立学校执教。毕业于路易斯安那学院，获路易斯安那理工大学硕士学位，并在佐治亚大学深造。后在北卡罗莱纳大学、佐治亚大学和路易斯安那理工大学从事教师职业培训工作。
