Life of a predator is not always easy, and being the ‘Prince of the Jungle’ in Sri Lanka is not as easy as it seems with strong natural pred and what Gayan Gamage, Naturalist of ‘Nature Trails’, the award-winning Nature... and Wildlife Service Provider of John Keells Hotels saw last week, was a sighting of a lifetime!When Gayan took some guests of Chaaya Wild Yala on safari during the wee hours of a Sunday (9th), never did he imagine capturing some great images of a duel between a young leopard and some wild boar. Gayan spotted the young leopard relaxing by a waterhole, and was excited about the photographic opportunity provided for his guests. However, he was quick to observe that this leopard was already injured, possibly after a gruelling battle with another leopard. Soon another territorial female leopard came by to mark its territory as a warning sign for the young male leopard. The young male managed to scare away the female and resume its period of relaxation and recovery time. However, he was surrounded by natural predators such as the mugger crocodile and the wild boar. Although the first battle was between the crocodile and the female boar that was trying to protect its offspring, the crocodile was soon discouraged once the mother boar unleashed its strong tusks. As soon as the croc scurried away, maternal instincts soon signalled danger when the leopard was spotted in the vicinity and even without any provocation, the wild boar charged only to keep her piglets safe. The boar was then assisted by two other female boars and soon it was a battle between three against one. Though the leopard knew it was a win-or-die situation, his injuries was giving him trouble on accurate bites and blows. After many frail attempts to defend itself against the large tusks of the boars, the leopard soon gave up only to be met by one final fatal blow. Knowing that the leopard was no more a threat to its young, the boars went their way as the leopard staggered across the shrub jungle to find some shade. Along the way it was almost attacked by the crocodile once again but used the last bit of its strength to effectively scare it away. Finally, the brutally mauled Prince of the Jungle had made it to the shade and collapsed to place its head on the wild grass for one last time... While the Park Warden and the Veterinary Surgeon was contacted at the time, the deed was done at their time of arrival and the natural laws had provided justice in its own way. 猛兽猫的称呼由自它们粗壮的犬齿，可以咬断猎物的颈部肌肉和骨头，让其窒息而死。Genus
Panthera豹属起源于约三百万年前，逐渐进化出现代的大猫。现代大猫的史前亲戚生活于更新世直至（距离人类历史时期）不久前，遍布南非、亚洲、欧洲和北美。有些种类如cave

rufus calcaratus (Irvingtonian Bobcat)，它比现代短尾猫更大。另外一个更新世亚种是Lynx
rufus koakudsi。
北美上新世小型猫包括：Felis lacustris湖猫（曾被认为是一种猞猁，不过现在被确定为一种美洲狮）、F
rexroadensis（有可能是一种猞猁或豹子）、F protolyncis（一种原始猞猁）和F
longignathus（也很类似猞猁）。
猫属：咕噜猫
猫属起源于一千两百万年前。这个属进化出许多小型猫咪。它们因为特殊的喉咙构造（可以发出咕噜声），所以又被称为咕噜猫。
现代猫属最早的两个种类是卢那猫（已灭绝）和兔狲。而现代猫（包括家猫）的祖先是F attica。

一种被推测为史前虎猫的Leopardus amnicola（河虎猫？）的化石被发现于美国亚利桑那州和佛罗里达州。
