　　关键是看the&reason在定语从句中作什么句子成分，如果做主语，宾语，则应该用that.如果作状语，则应该用why.例如：
He&didn't&explain&the&reason&why&he&was&late&this&morning.
这里the&reason在从句中作状语，表示原因。
The&reason&that&he&gave&for&his&lateness&was&that&he&didn't&catch&the&first&bus.&
这里the&reason在从句中作及物动词gave的宾语。

that 是关系代词，why 是关系副词，也就是说，that引导的定语从句中从句部分是缺成分的如It is the reason that he explained to me.explained后面缺宾语，that可以代替reason放在explained后面而why引导的定语从句后面的句子是完整的如It is the reason why he came late.he came late.是个完整的句子

定语从句中，关系词选用关系代词（that，which，who等）还是关系副词（when，where，why）取决于先行词在从句中做什么成分，如果作名词性成分（主宾表）就用关系代词，如果做副词性成分（状）就用关系副词，也就是说并不是表地点，时间，原因的名词后面就用where，when和why。例子：Please tell me the reason why he was late.（先行词reason在从句中作原因状语）
