Who is your Everyday Hero?
By this I mean, a person who you see
frequently as part of your life, work, school, etc.
Could be your neighbor, colleague, friend, family, someone you see in your neighborhood.

Closing Statement from Dave Lim
It's wonderful to see all the tributes and recognition you have be giving your everyday heroes.
Many people cited heroes based on their disposition towards life and those who give of themselves to others, especially parents and grandparents.
As food for thought, and to share, here are some definitions of heroes:

high school grades of Tom Monaghan, who was born in 1937, were so low that he
graduated at the bottom of his class. The local university turned down his
application, but he managed to enter the University of Michigan. A few weeks
later, he dropped out because he lacked money for school fees. In 1960,
Monaghan agreed to buy a pizza store with his brother, who gave up a year
the first year, Monaghan worked all the time but hardly made any money. He soon
found himself deep in debt. He began making the business simpler, selling only
three sizes of pizza, instead of five. This change helped Monaghan make a
profit, which allowed him to expand his three stores under a new name, Domino’s.
during the following years Monaghan experienced a series of setbacks. In
1967, a fire destroyed his store in Ypsilanti, Michigan, which served as the
company’s offices. Most of the damage was not covered by insurance. In an
effort to recover his losses, Monaghan continued to expand his franchise, but
was unable to keep up with the growth. Without Monaghan’s guidance, many of the
new stores closed down. By 1970, Monaghan was $1.5 million in debt and facing
lawsuits from nearly 150 debtors. In the following financial settlement,
Monaghan lost 51 percent of his company to the bank.
Monaghan concentrated on building the 49 percent of the business he still
owned. Slowly, he began to work his way out of his financial difficulties. He
defended himself in court since he could not afford a lawyer. He sold his
furniture and his car. In about a year, he managed to pay off all his debts.
hard times taught him a valuable lesson in how to run a business. By 1978, two
hundred Domino’s stores had opened. Five years later, the number of stores
by 1989, the chain had more than five thousand stores. The
company had more than six thousand pizza delivery stores when Monaghan sold it
for $1 billion in 1998.

Japanese researchers have revealed artificial intelligence

average score for the English section of the standardized entrance

Technology Laboratory Group said. Last year the software scored 52.
The NTT lab is developing the software alongside the
National Institute of Informatics, and is in charge of developing the
software's English capabilities。The project began in 2011 with a 10-year time

said Noriko Arai, an NII professor who heads the project, told the Asahi

The latest test score results showed that Torobo-kun has a
probability of at least 80 percent of passing the exams of 80 percent of 581
private universities across Japan。One reason is the great improvement in its
scores for English and Japanese, Yoyogi Seminar officials said。
they admit the software has more work to do. The AI program cannot grasp

People in the US have a special camp to go to this summer. Those who are tired of the social media and want to
unplug(不插电) for a couple of days can
consider going to a fast-growing summer camp three hours outside of San
Francisco. Checking into the camp involves handing over your personal electronics
to volunteers in white lab coats.
&&& Camp Grounded now in its
second year, offers attendees a break from the noise of social media. The rules
of this camp are clear: No shop talk, no alcohol, and most importantly, no
phones, computers, tablets or watches.
&&& Co-founder Levi Felix has
stressed it is not just an experience for tech workers, although current and
former Silicon Valley(硅谷)
employees make up the biggest part of the attendees. This year, campers ranged
from college graduates to retirees.
&&& In recent years, the
“unplugging movement” came into vogue(流行). In other words, it really received more and more
popularity------although it has been criticized by the press for causing
“postmodern techno-anxiety” and failing to recognize the positive impacts of
technology. Each March, thousands of people unplug from their devices for 24
hours, as part of an event organized by the nonprofit organization Reboot.
&&& Tech-free getaway options
like Camp Grounded are growing in the US. With no iPhones or computers to
distract them, campers at Camp Grounded participate in all kinds of interesting
activities featuring yoga, laughing contests and writing courses. But for many of the participants, the most exciting
activity is conversation. Campers adopt nicknames and are forbidden to talk
about work or disclosing their age.
&&& Felix says that the aim of
the camp is not to break away from the modern society “We still live in the
modern society. It’s not about not using technology. It’s about being in
control of using it and it’s all about what you do when the devices are gone.”

Everyone has dreams and
they obey the rules that if you can dream it, you can achieve it! Here are four
goals for people to reach a perfect life in their future.
The first goal common
to all of us is health and energy. We all want to be healthy and fit, to have
high levels of energy and to live free of pains and illnesses. Today, with the
incredible advances in medical science, the quality of our health and fitness,
and our lifespan, is largely determined by design, not by chance. People with
excellent health habits are far healthier, have more energy, and live longer
and better than people who have poor health habits. Remember that health is not
everything, but without health everything is nothing!
The second goal that we
all have in common is to enjoy excellent relationships--- intimate, personal or
social--- with the people we like and respect, and who like and respect us in
turn. Fully 85% of your happiness will be determined by the quality of your
relationships at each stage, and in each area, of your life. How well you get
along with people, and how much they like, love and respect you, have more
impact on the quality of your life than perhaps any other factor.
The third common goal
is to do work that we enjoy, to do it well, and to be well paid for it. You
want to be able to get and keep the job you want, to get paid more and elevated
faster. You want to earn the very most that is possible for you at each stage
of your career, whatever you do.
The fourth goal we all
have in common is to achieve financial independence. You want to reach the
point in life where you have enough money so that you never have to worry about
money again. You want to completely be free of financial worries. You want to
be able to order dinner in a restaurant without referring to the price listings
to determine what you want to eat.

Have you ever thought about one question: why do we need to learn
It is an interesting question. Kids around the world have been
asking it for years. For US students, they may get the answer from a new
exhibition called “Math Alive!” 47activities are designed to teach kids how
math is used in every day life. For example, at one exhibition station,
(1)visitors can test that a person’s arm span(臂展) equals their height. At another station, visitors can control the robot with the help
of math skills.
  (2)The exhibition will visit 15
US and international cities in the next five years.
Organizers say they want more kids to learn why math is important in daily
life. Think of simple things, like clocks. (3)They
tell time, but only if you know how to read them. That
means using math. How much longer until school ends? How long did you sleep
last night? That’s all math, too.
(4)When you go ________, you also
do lots of math. How much change would you get if you paid for a 25.99-yuan
sweater with two twenties? How would you calculate a 30% discount(折扣)? Even when you’re not doing
math, it’s all around you. The computer you use to surf the Internet is a machine
to do binary (二进制) math very fast.

At the outbreak of war in September 1939, Doreen Luke
was fifteen years old and had just begun work as an apprentice (学徒) in a department store
selling clothing and household goods in her hometown of Bodmin in Cornwall.
Doreen recalls the first day of war, “My mother was in the process of cooking
the Sunday dinner when the Prime Minister announced over the radio that we were
at war with Germany… From then on everything changed in our lives. Suddenly
there was a different atmosphere.”
During the first years of the war, Doreen was part of a concert party that
entertained civilians and service personnel in Cornwall. “ My seventeenth
birthday came in January 1941. Many of my friends were joining the Forces. I
was becoming very restless. In any case soon at the age of eighteen I would be
called up to go and work in a factory or to do some other vital war work but
that didn’t appeal to me. I was more adventurous than that!”
Realizing that the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force(WAAF)was recruiting (招募) wireless operators, Doreen
quickly made up her mind. At the age of eighteen, she received her call-up
papers and became a member of the WAAF. After one year’s training, Doreen
became a wireless operator at Bletchley Park and began work in the Auto Room.
Doreen recalls her first visit to Bletchley and the secrecy
essential to her work, “I didn’t realize when I first stepped into that room
that I was going to be a part of a very secret department. In fact I didn’t
know that until fifty years after the war.”

&&& With a
good shopping position and the right amount of money, any educated person ought
to be able to make a living out of a bookshop. It is not a difficult trade to
learn and the large chain-stores can never force the small bookseller out of
existence as they have done to the corner shop. But the hours of work are very
long---I was only doing a part-time job, but my boss put in a seventy---hour
week, besides regular journeys out of shopping hours to buy books.
The real reason why I should not like to be back in the book trade for life,
however, is that while I was in it I lost my love of books. A bookseller cannot
always tell the truth about his books, and that gives him a dislike for them.
There was a time when I really did love books---loved the sight and smell and
feel of them---if they were fifty or more years old, that is. Nothing pleased
me quite so much as to buy a bargain lot of them on sale for several pounds.
There is a peculiar flavour(独特的味道)about the unexpected
books you pick up in that kind of collection: little-known eighteenth-century
poets, or out-of-date geography books. For occasional reading---in your bath,
for example, or late at night when you are too tired to go to bed---there is
nothing as good as a very old picture story-book.
But as soon as I went to work in the bookshop I stopped buying books. Seen in a
mass, five or ten thousand at a time, books were dull and even a little
tiresome. Nowadays I do buy one occasionally, but only if it is a book that I
want to read and can’t be borrowed easily, and I never buy rubbish.

Basic Math introduces students to the basic concepts of mathematics,
as well as the fundamentals of more tricky areas. These 30 fantastic lectures
are designed to provide students with an understanding of arithmetic and to
prepare them for Algebra(代数) and beyond.
The lessons in Basic Math cover every basic aspect of arithmetic.
They also look into exponents(指数), the order of operations, and square roots. In addition to
learning how to perform various mathematical operations, students discover why
these operations work, how a particular mathematical topic relates to other
branches of mathematics, and how these operations can be used practically.
Basic Math starts from the relatively easier concepts and gradually
moves on to the more troublesome ones, so as to allow for steady and sure
understanding of the material by students. The lectures offer students the
chance to “make sense” of mathematical knowledge that may have seemed so
frightening. They also help students prepare for college mathematics and
overcome their anxiety about this amazing—and completely understandable—field
By the conclusion of the course, students will have improved their
understanding of basic math. They will be able to clear away the mystery of
mathematics and face their studies with more confidence than they ever
imagined. In addition, they will strengthen their ability to accept new and
exciting mathematical challenges.

many times, you have got the feeling that a white guy who is 20 looks like 30.
And they go bald faster too. Though there are also some who look really young
for their age, white people generally look older!
Why do they look older? I
think it’s because of both genes and lifestyle. White people are generally
taller, which makes them appear older. Moreover, they like to be sunburnt,
which ages and damages the skin and causes wrinkles. A 15-year-old white girl
is addicted to sunbeds and has been using them for 3 years – and her skin is
literally baked and dermatologists (皮肤科医生) say that she has the skin of a 35-year-old!
In fact, aging is based
little on race, as it is on diet, exercise, and other lifestyle choices. We
tend to eat more skin-friendly food, like fish and beans, but white people do
not eat them so much. Makeup is bad for skin and ages it quicker too, and
generally, white people start to wear it much younger and use a lot of it. Some
even start to experiment with makeup at about 8 or 9 and wear makeup properly
at around 12 to 14. Some white celebrities might look a little younger due to
their makeup, but still they look older than their age.

friends on the Internet as a way of practicing their language skills and
learning more about new cultures. Traditional pen pals were the primary source
for such contacts, and students could write each other letters. With the
Internet, finding friends has become much easier, and such relationships are
called key pals. However, care and consideration should be given when finding
friends on the Internet:
&&&& Search the Internet for

Look for reviews of such sites to learn more about other students' experiences.
Don't join a service until you have done your research.

&&&& Never give personal
information to anyone, including your home address, phone number, and birthday.

if you feel uncomfortable with the topics of conversation. Again, if you
protect your identity, this will be easier to do. Tell your teachers, parents,

discoveries suggest that trade between Europe and Asia along the Silk Road probably began many centuries earlier than once thought. The findings add a
fascinating new page to the epic(史诗) of the Silk Road, which
spread far and wide in no time.
The latest
and most surprising discovery is pieces of silk found in the hair of an
Egyptian mummy(木乃伊) from about l,000 BC, long before
regular traffic on the Silk Road and at least one thousand years before silk
was previously thought to be used in Egypt. Other researches may extend human
activity along this road back even further, perhaps a million years to the
moving of human ancestors into eastern Asia.
The official
origin of East-West trade along the road is usually placed in the late 2nd
century BC when an agent of the Chinese Emperor Wu-di returned from a dangerous
secret task across the desert into the remote high country of Central Asia. The
agent, Zhang Qian, traveled as far as Afghanistan and brought back knowledge of
even more distant lands such as Persia, Syria and a place known as Lijien,
perhaps Rome. Historians(历史学家) have called this one of the
most important journeys in ancient times. His journey opened the way for what
have been thought to be the first indirect touches between the ancient world’s
two super-powers, China and Rome. Chinese silk, first traded to Central Asia
for war horses, was soon finding its way to the markets of Rome through a
network of businessmen.
But the new
discoveries show that Chinese silk apparently existed in the West long before
the Han emperor started to organize trade over the Silk Road. The research
could change thinking about the early history of world trade and provide comprehension
into the mystery(谜) of just how and when Europe first
realized the glorious culture at the other end of Eurasia.

[1]When children go to camp, they are on their own, sometimes for the
very first time in their lives. They have to decide what to wear, what to eat
and which activities to participate in. As a result they develop confidence and
independence.
[2]As self-respect develops from learning to be on their own,
children continue to try new activities. Also it is possible that they will
engage in what they are unfamiliar with. In school, children do not experience
success in the same way. Camp can be a school without failure because just
having fun makes them a success.
[3]One of the greatest benefits of a camp experience is that children
develop social skills. In a camp setting, a good counselor will make sure that
every camper is included in the activity and that each child interacts with the
others in a positive way. They learn to give and take, and they learn how to
work and cooperate. Something as simple as clean-up, is not only there to get
the cabin clean, but to promote a team atmosphere of working together which in
turn results in friendship.
[4]The obvious benefit of camp is that campers make long lasting
friendships. These friendships can often be unique and special because campers
are living with each other and see the true personalities. Chi1dren learn to
see others from a different viewpoint. Children tend to be accepted for who
they are and do not have to be concerned about what they wear, what they are
good at and how they look. This is because in a camp setting, respect and
caring finally win out over materialistic objectives.
[5]In a word, camp does give children fun, friends and fulfillment.
