JANUARY 2015 -- Ford Motor Co. said Wednesday it is recalling 25,700 SUVs and crossovers in two separate campaigns, including the latest callback by the industry for ignition switches that could cause air bags to fail.
Both campaigns involve certain 2015 Lincoln MKC compact crossovers. The automaker is not aware of any accidents or injuries in either recall.
Ford is calling back 13,500 2015 Lincoln MKC crossovers to move the pushbutton keyless ignition switch location. The automaker said that because of the switch&s close proximity to other controls, drivers were inadvertantly shutting off the engine while driving. If the engine is shut off while driving, air bags may not inflate as intended.
The ignition recall covers 2015 Lincoln MKC vehicles built Aug. 20, 2013 to Sept. 9, 2014 at Ford&s Louisville Assembly Plant. The recall covers 11,144 vehicles in the United States and its territories, 2,033 in Canada and 397 in Mexico.
Dealers will replace the gearshift module with one that has the pushbutton start in a different location, and they will reprogram the powertrain control module.
Ignition switches have gotten a lot of attention this year. General Motors Co. recalled 2.6 million older cars in February that are linked to 42 deaths because ignition keys could move out of position, causing cars to stall and disabling power steering and air bags. Other automakers have recalled vehicles for other ignition-switch issues.
Separately, Ford is recalling 12,200 2014 Ford Escapes and 2015 Lincoln MKCs for a fuel pump issue. Ford said an issue with the nickel plating on the fuel pump may cause the pump to seize. If it seizes, the SUV may not start or may stall while driving.
Affected vehicles include 2014 Ford Escapes built April 15, 2014 to May 8, 2014 in Louisville and certain 2015 Lincoln MKCs built April 21, 2014 to May 15, 2014 in the same plant.
The fuel pump recall covers 9,038 vehicles in the United States, 3,074 in Canada and 93 in Mexico. last year.

SEPT 2014 -- Ford Motor Co. said Friday it is recalling 850,000 vehicles because an electrical glitch could prevent the air bags from deploying in a crash.
The Dearborn automaker said in a statement Friday that is recalling some 2013-14 Ford C-MAX, Fusion, Escape and Lincoln MKZ vehicles in North America for an issue with the restraints control module.
The recall includes 745,000 vehicles in the United States, 82,000 in Canada and 20,000 in Mexico.
The module may experience a short circuit, Ford said.
&If a short circuit occurs, the airbag warning indicator will illuminate. Depending on the location of the short circuit, the deployable restraint systems (e.g., airbags, pretensioners, side curtains) may not function as intended in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury. The short circuit may also affect the function of other systems that use data from the restraints control module, including stability control,& Ford said.
The recall includes the 2013 Escape & which in a short period has become one of Ford's most recalled vehicles.
This marks the 12th recall for various versions of the 2013 Escape and Ford has issued 41 technical service bulletins for various problems.
Ford said it is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this condition. Dealers will replace the restraints control module.
Automakers this year have recalled millions of vehicles because the airbags could fail to deploy. The auto industry has recalled a record setting more than 45 million vehicles this year & breaking the all-time record of 30.8 million vehicles recalled set in 2004.
The new Ford recall includes
C-MAX vehicles built at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne from Jan. 19, 2012 to Nov. 21, 2013; some
Fusion vehicles built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant, Feb. 3, 2012 to Aug. 24, 2013; some 2013-14 Escape vehicles built at Louisville Assembly Plant, Oct. 5, 2011 to Nov. 1, 2013; and some 2013-14 Lincoln MKZ vehicles built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant, April 25, 2012 to Sept. 30, 2013.

AUG 2014 -- Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2014 Ford Escape vehicles manufactured October 15, 2013, through October 22, 2013. The panorama roof glass may not be properly bonded to the attaching bracket. If the glass panel is improperly bonded, the glass may separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. Ford has notified owners. Dealers will inspect each vehicle and replace the front roof glass if its production date and sequence number falls within the affected range, free of charge. The recall is began on July 14, 2014. Ford's number for this recall is 14S13. JULY 2014 -- Ford Motor Co. said late Monday it is recalling 101,000 vehicles in six new recall campaigns, bringing the total recalls so far this year by the Dearborn automaker to nearly 3 million vehicles in the United States.
The biggest recall covers 92,000 vehicles in North America, including
models of the Ford Taurus, Ford Flex, Ford Police Interceptor, Lincoln MKS and Lincoln MKT;
Ford E and 2014 Lincoln MKX. All have potential issues with the right-side halfshaft.
Because of faulty assembly, the vehicles may experience &loss of drive function,& Ford said. The Ford said the vehicles could roll away if the gearshift is placed in &park& without the emergency brake being activated.
Ford said dealers will inspect the halfshaft and repair or replace as needed.
Ford is also recalling 2,100 2014 Ford Escape SUVs for a potential problem with the panorama roof glass that may have an improperly cured bond between the glass and the attaching bracket that could result in noise, water leak or separation of the panel from the vehicle. Dealers will replace the panel if they were built between Oct. 15 and Oct. 22, 2013, at the Louisville Assembly Plant.
Ford said no crashes or injuries have been reported in any of the new recall campaigns.
The recalls are the latest sign that automakers are boosting recalls because of stricter scrutiny from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Ford recalled 1.19 million vehicles in 16 recall campaigns in the United States in all of 2013. So far this year, Ford says it has issued 19 recalls covering 2.94 million vehicles.
Automakers have recalled nearly 40 million vehicles in the United States this year, an all-time record that shatters the 30.8 million recalled in 2004. General Motors Co. leads the pack with 25.2 million callbacks, also an all-time record.
Other recalls announced Monday by Ford:
■ 197 2014 Ford Fiestas are being called back in North America for a potential issue with the fuel tank. Some fuel tanks may be missing an adhesive layer. Without that adhesive, it may leak fuel and catch fire.
Two of the recalls involve Ford commercial vehicles:
■ Ford is recalling 5,264
Ford F59 Commercial Stripped Chassis vehicles in North America because electrical junction blocks could short-circuit if driven in areas where salt is spread on roads. Drivers may experience smoke coming from the right front wheel well, a loss of electrical power & or potentially a fire, with or without the engine running. Dealers will replace the block.
■ Ford is recalling 635 2014 Ford F53 Motorhome Stripped Chassis and F59 Commercial Stripped Chassis vehicles in North America for a possible issue with the brake calipers. Some may have been incorrectly machined and could result in a leak between the piston and piston bore, which could result in longer brake pedal travel and increased stopping distances.
Some of the recalls are very minor, but automakers are taking no chances running afoul of NHTSA:.
■ 368 2014 Ford Transit Connect vans are being called back because of a labeling issue with the brake fluid reservoir cap in Puerto Rico. The brake reservoir cap on the affected vehicles does not conform to brake system labeling requirement. The vehicles shipped to Puerto Rico had a European brake reservoir pictogram label, which does not contain the text required by U.S. law.
The recalls are the most recent by the Dearborn automaker. In May, it announced it was recalling nearly 1.4 million vehicles in four separate recall campaigns, including 1.1 million Ford Escapes, Mercury Mariners and Ford Explorers in North America for power steering problems.
Three of the four recalls came under pressure from U.S. and Canadian auto safety regulators & another sign that government agencies are taking a harder line with automakers in the aftermath of the General Motors Co. recall crisis. Ford opted to recall the vehicles rather than fight regulators.

Ford Motor Co. said Tuesday it is issuing two new recalls for fire risks in some 2013 Ford Escape SUVs, after it received new reports of engine fires.
Ford said it is recalling nearly 140,000 2013 Ford Escape SUVs with 1.6L engines in the United States because they may experience underhood fires due to overheating of the engine cylinder head leading to cracks causing oil leaks. Ford said it is 161,334 2013 Ford Escape SUVs worldwide after they had reports of 13 additional fires & including Canada & stemming from the engine issue. No injuries have been reported.
Of those vehicles, Ford is issuing a second recall to cover 9,469 2013 Escapes in the U.S. that will need to be inspected in order to prevent a fuel leak that could also potentially result in an engine compartment fire. The subset recall is 11,821 worldwide in total.
Owners will be notified by late January to take the SUVs to a dealer to have &enhancements to the engine shielding, cooling and control systems made to their vehicles.&
These are the fourth and fifth recalls that Ford has issued to address fire problems with the Escape. Overall Ford has issued six recalls for the 2013 Escape.
Ford said it &has received warranty reports of fuel odor or leaks related to engine compartment fuel lines on 2013 model year Ford Escape vehicles that were previously fixed& under an earlier recall. &Subsequent investigation by Ford identified that some engine compartment fuel lines may have been installed incorrectly by service technicians.&
That may create &a chafe condition,& and Ford said since the recall, the &chafe condition has resulted in reports of fuel odor and leaks but there have been no reports of fires, accidents or injuries attributed to this condition. A subset of the population will also have the engine compartment fuel line inspected and replaced as required.&
In November 2012, Ford issued its third fire recall on its 2013 Ford Escape. The automaker recalled 89,000 Escapes and Ford Fusions for fire risks & and said it didn't have a fix. About 10 days later, Ford unveiled a software upgrade to fix the vehicles. Before it had a fix, Ford urged owners of the vehicles with 1.6-liter engines to contact dealers immediately to get alternative transportation.
Ford said it issued the recall after reports of engine overheating followed by engine fires while the vehicle was running. There were reports of 13 fires, including 12 in Escapes.
In September 2012, Ford issued another recall for its 2013 Ford Escape, saying an improperly installed part could lead to a risk of a fire.
That recall covered 7,600 2013 Escape SUVs built with 1.6-liter engines, including 6,150 in the United States and 1,300 in Canada. Ford said the recall is to prevent a dislodged plug in the engine cylinder head.
In July 2012, Ford recalled 11,500 new 2013 Ford Escape SUVs with 1.6-liter engines and urged owners to stop driving them immediately because of fire dangers caused by damaged fuel lines. In that recall, the risk stemmed from a possible damaged fuel line that may lead to a significant fuel leak that could lead to a fire if the vehicle is running.
&Those are great lessons learned. We're dealing with them now,& Ford president and CEO Alan Mulally said in January. &We were very disappointed it happened on a fantastic vehicle. ... We're always learning new things and we'll fix the process.&
Overall, Ford has issued six recalls for the 2013 Escape.
In mid-July, Ford issued its first 2013 Escape recall. More than 10,000 new Escapes were recalled because incorrectly positioned carpet padding could lead to interference with braking.

Federal safety regulators have opened a new safety investigation into 724,000 Ford Escape, Fusion and Mercury models over hundreds of reports of sudden loss of engine power.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday it has opened a preliminary investigation into the 2009-11 Ford Escape and Fusion, and Mercury Mariner and Milan. NHTSA said it has 123 reports indicating allegations of reduced power or vehicle stall in Escape vehicles under investigation.
Ford made a design change in 2009 to address complaints but did not recall the vehicles. NHTSA said there have been 27,500 warranty claims for the issue, along with reports of three crashes and one injury. Ford has received more than 1,400 complaints about the issue.
&We are cooperating fully with NHTSA on this investigation, as we do on all investigations,& said Ford spokeswomanr.
Vehicles manufactured between June 2009 and October 2009 may contain contaminated circuit boards with plating variations, NHTSA said. Plating variations could lead to a failure. Ford and its supplier, Delphi Corp., modified the manufacturing process and issued a technical service bulletin in October 2010, NHTSA said.
Vehicles produced after Oct. 15, 2009 have electronic throttle bodies manufactured with a new process that resolved this condition, the government said. The bulletin instructed dealers to replace the throttle body on a number of Ford and Lincoln vehicles. Depending on the condition of throttle control system malfunction, a driver may experience varying levels of reduced engine performance.
Vehicles are not likely to unexpectedly stall as a result, but drivers may describe it as a stall even though the engine is still running, NHTSA said. Separately, NHTSA said it received 59 complaints alleging incidents of engine stalling while driving in model year 2010-11 Ford Fusions.
About 60 percent of the incidents occurred at speeds of 40 miles per hour or more.

2012 -- Ford is recalling certain 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from October 5, 2011, through November 26, 2012 equipped with 1.6L and 2013 Fusion vehicles manufactured from February 3, 2012, through November 29, 2012 equipped with 1.6L engines. The engines may overheat leading to fluid leaks that may come in contact with the hot exhaust system.
Fluid leaks in the presence of an ignition source such as a hot exhaust system may result in a fire. The remedy for this recall campaign is still under development. Until the recall remedy has been performed, Ford is advising owners to contact their dealer or call the Ford telephone hotline to arrange alternate transportation. The safety recall began on December 7, 2012.

November 30, 2012
2012 -- Ford Motor Co. issued its fourth recall Friday for its 2013 Ford Escape SUV, citing a fire risk.
The recall affects 73,320 Escapes, as well as 15,833 midsized 2013 Ford Fusions. Some 80,000 of the recalled vehicles were in the U.S.
It's the latest setback for the Escape, introduced in June and a key vehicle in Ford's lineup.
The Dearborn automaker urged owners of the vehicles with 1.6-liter engines to contact dealers immediately, to arrange loaners. But unlike an earlier Escape recall, this one didn't caution drivers to stop driving them.
&We have identified an issue and are taking actions in the best interest of our customers,& .. director of Ford's automotive safety office, said in a statement. &It is important that affected customers not ignore this recall and contact their dealer as soon as possible. While we recognize the inconvenience recalls cause our customers, we are taking these actions on their behalf to help ensure their safety.&
The recall is for Escape and Fusion SE and SEL models with a 1.6-liter engine.
The company said it has not yet established repair procedures, and can't say when owners will be able to get their cars fixed. Ford spokesman .. said engine overheating can lead to fluid leaks, which may come in contact with a hot exhaust system and trigger a fire.
&We're developing a fix which is designed to keep the fluids from reaching the hot exhaust components,& he said. &We'll update our customers as soon as we can.&
Ford said it received 13 reports of engine fires that followed overheating. No injuries have been reported.
Ford told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration late Friday that the first report of an Escape fire was Sept. 7 in Florida from a vehicle that didn't have an engine dipstick, which allowed oil to be expelled. A second fire was reported Sept. 24 in Virginia and a third fire Oct. 22 in Arizona. Since Nov. 8, Ford has become aware of five more fires. Ford formed a task force Nov. 12 to investigate the fires, finding a pattern.
The fire issue may stick in some people's minds but with so much recall news today, consumers are likely to remember less about it over time, said Jessica Caldwell, senior analyst for automotive research . &Over the long term, it's not going to do a lot of damage& to sales, Caldwell said.
Manager of product analysis for AutoPacific Inc., said a recall involving the high-volume 1.6-liter engine means anything that goes wrong with it will affect a lot of customers,
Ford issued its first 2013 Escape recall in July, saying incorrectly positioned carpet padding may lead to interference with braking in more than 10,000 vehicles.
Also that month, Ford recalled 11,500 2013 Escape SUVs with 1.6-liter engines and urged owners to stop driving them immediately because of fire dangers. Ford says more than 90 percent of those have been fixed & and the number may be higher because dealers have 30 days to submit reimbursement claims.
The third recall, on 7,600 1.6-liter Escapes, came in S Ford said an improperly installed part could lead to a fire risk.
Customers should contact their dealer for free alternative transportation. U.S. owners can call 866-436-7332 and Canadian customers can call 888-222-7814 for details on securing transportation.
Ford says customers can find out if their vehicle is part of the recall by checking their VIN number
under the Support tab and View Notices and Recalls, or by contacting their dealer.

SEPTEMBER 2012 --& Ford Motor Co.
said Wednesday it is issuing a third recall for its redesigned 2013 Ford Escape
SUV that went on sale in June, saying an improperly installed part could lead to
a risk of fire.
The new recall covers 7,600 2013 Escape SUVs built with 1.6-liter engines,
including 6,150 in the United States and 1,300 in Canada.& This is the
second recall for fire risks issued since July.& The recalled vehicles were
built between Oct. 5, 2011, and Aug. 31.
Ford says the recall is to prevent a dislodged cup plug in the engine
cylinder head.& A dislodged plug could result in an immediate discharge of
engine coolant. Rapid loss of coolant could result in a combustible glycol
concentration near hot engine components and create a risk of fire. The recall
covers only manually Ford expects just 0.4 percent of
vehicles recalled will have faulty parts..
Ford said it has no reports of fires from customers, but one fire in an
Escape SUV on a dealer lot was reported in Tennessee. The fire took place during
a pre-delivery drive. Ford said a dealer employee was taking the vehicle on a
test drive before it was to be delivered to a customer and noticed steam. He
quickly returned to the dealership, and that's when the vehicle caught fire. The
fire was quickly extinguished at the dealership and no one was injured.
Ford learned of the fire on Aug. 8 and decided to recall the vehicles after a
19-day investigation.
Dealers will install an additional plug sealant, and a secondary cap will be
installed over the original plug. The repair will take 31/2 hours and parts are
in stock.&&&

DETROIT& NEWS -- July 26, 2012
JULY 2012 -- &In the face of a new
government investigation, Ford Motor Co. said Thursday it is recalling nearly
485,000 Escapes and other SUVs to repair sticky gas pedals that can lead to
unintended acceleration incidents.& It comes less than two weeks after a
safety advocacy group wrote Ford president.. urging him to recall the vehicles.
The recall covers 423,000
Escape SUVs with 3-liter V-6 engines with
cruise control and 60,000 outside the U.S.
Ford said because of a lack of clearance between the cruise control cable,
when a driver has the cruise control engaged, they may not be able to disengage
the throttle...The NHTSA has 99 reports alleging incidents of stuck throttles in
Ford Escapes and Mazda Tributes with V6 engines. Of the total, 68
reports are from E 31 are from owners of model year 2001 through
2004 Tributes. Thirteen crashes and 9 injuries were reported.
In December 2004, Ford recalled 470,000
Escapes, describing an
accelerator cable assembly defect that could cause the throttle to stick. That
same month, Mazda, which sold a nearly identical vehicle, recalled 121,000
Tribute SUVs.& Ford sent dealers an updated repair procedure in
October 2005, with updated illustrations and a warning to help prevent damage to
the speed control cable while replacing the accelerator cable. Mazda did not
issue a similar notice.
But by that time, nearly 320,000 Escapes from the
model years
already were fixed, and their owners never were informed of the updated
procedure. The 2002 Ford Escape that crashed Arizona., .was fixed in January
2005, before the repair update.& Ford said it only learned of the death
from NHTSA and inspected the vehicle on June 20. That review prompted Ford to
begin a review of the data and the company's field review committee decided to
recall the vehicles on Monday. NHTSA has been investigating the crash since
early this year. It obtained the police report and has sought additional
information from the teen's family.
&The defective accelerator cable caused high idles, but the damaged cruise
control cable caused far worse open-throttle accelerations by breaking the
cruise cable protective guide which allowed the connector end of the cable to
jam against the engine cover,& Clarence Ditlow, executive of the Center for
Automotive Safety, said in a July 10 letter to Ford CEO.
Ditlow urged a new recall for what he called a &lethal cruise control cable
defect.& &We ask that you exercise that moral leadership by recalling all Ford
Escapes with the defective cruise control cable in the 2002-04 model years to
avoid more deaths and injuries which would otherwise occur if Ford waits& for
NHTSA to investigate, Ditlow wrote.
This is the third recall in two weeks for the Escape. Last week, Ford
recalled 11,500 new 2013 models with 1.6-liter engines because the fuel lines
could leak. The company also recalled 10,000 2013 Escapes to fix carpet padding
that could interfere with brakes.&
JULY 2012 --&Ford Motor Company is
recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 Escape vehicles equipped with
3.0L V6 engines and speed control manufactured from October 22, 1999, through
January 23, 2004. Inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed
control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator
pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed. This risk exists regardless of whether
or not speed control (cruise control) is used. A stuck throttle may result in
very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop or slow the vehicle,
which could cause a crash, serious injury or death. Ford will notify owners, and
dealers will repair the vehicles by increasing the engine cover clearance, free
of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on, or before, August 6, 2012.
Remedy parts are expected to be available in mid-August 2012. Until then dealers
will disconnect the speed control cable as an interim remedy, if parts are not
available at the time of an owner's service appointment. Ford's recall campaign
number is 12S37. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or

recalled 11,500 2013 Escape SUVs on Thursday over fire risks, and urged owners
to immediately stop driving the vehicles. It's the latest setback for the
redesigned vehicle that launched last month.
The recall covers Escapes with the 1.6-liter engine, which were built through
July 11. Escapes equipped with the 2.0-liter and the 2.5-liter engines are
unaffected. Ford says it will replace an engine compartment fuel line, which
could split and leak fuel, and could lead to an underhood fire.
The Dearborn automaker said three fires have been reported since June 9,
including two being driven by employees at its Louisville Assembly plant and one
by an owner in Canada. No injuries have been reported. After the third fire on
July 11 at the plant, Ford halted shipments of Escapes with the 1.6-liter engine
until it discovered the cause.
Ford is advising affected owners not to drive their vehicles and to contact
their dealers immediately for the needed repair. Dealers will deliver a loaner
vehicle to customers and will then transport their 2013 Escape to the dealership
until the repair has been completed.
It is extremely rare for an automaker to urge owners to stop driving a

struggles to properly recall vehicles with potential unintended acceleration
issues in 2009 and 2010.
Ford spokeswoman ..said the automaker notified dealers on Wednesday, but
didn't notify owners until Thursday because dealers had to be prepared to handle
customer needs.
Because the fires were reported when the vehicles were running, Ford doesn't
believe owners are at risk if vehicles are stored in garages. A vehicle being
prepared for shipping on July 5 at the Lousiville Assembly plant had a fuel leak
linked to the same fuel line problem.
The recall covers 9,300 vehicles in the United States and 2,200 in Canada. Of
the vehicles being recalled, 4,800 have been purchased.&

JULY 2012 --&Ford Motor Co. is recalling
more than 10,000 redesigned 2013 Escape SUVs because mispositioned carpet
padding may lead to interference with braking.& The recall covers 8,266
Escapes in the U.S. and 2,193 in Canada. The Escapes being recalled were built
at the Louisville Assembly Plant from March 8 through June 7.
The redesigned Escape went on sale in June and is a key vehicle for the
Dearborn automaker. Ford plans to add a third shift in Kentucky by September to
meet additional demand for the vehicle.& Ford said in early June, an
employee noted the space between the brake pedal and the center console
left-side trim panel &which may result in the driver contacting the edge of the
brake pedeal while transferring the foot from the accelerator to the brake
Ford said the issue could increase braking distance but says it has no
reports of the problem happening with customers.& Owners will be notified
starting July 23. Ford dealers will remove the carpet padding and replace the
left-side console trim panel with a new panel that has a new surface contour.&
Ford spokeswoman ..said Saturday the recall also covers &a few hundred& Escape
vehicles in Mexico. No vehicles outside North America are affected.
She said no reports or complaints from customers have been received.....Ford
sent the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notice on July 2 in a
letter that it was recalling the vehicles. But the notice didn't show up on a
government website for more than 10 days.
JULY 2012 --&Ford is recalling certain
model year 2013 escape vehicles manufactured from march 8, 2012 through june 7,
2012. Due to mis-positioned carpet padding the center console trim panel may be
pushed outboard of the intended position, reducing clearance relative to the
pedal package. The reduced clearance may result in the driver&s foot contacting
the side of the brake pedal while transferring the foot from the accelerator
pedal to the brake pedal, increasing stopping distances and the risk of a crash.
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will remove the carpet padding and
left-side console trim panel replaced with a new panel, free of charge. The
recall is expected to begin on july 23, 2012. Ford's recall campaign number is

DETROIT& NEWS -- July 17, 2012
JULY 2012 --&The National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration opened an investigation Tuesday into 730,000 Ford Escape
and Mazda Tribute SUVs that may have been improperly repaired after a 2004
recall and could have resulted in unintended acceleration.&
The announcement comes after the fatal crash of a 2002 Ford Escape in January
in Arizona that killed a 17-year-old driver that had been repaired before Ford
updated its dealers on how to make the repairs.& Ford recalled
470,000 Escapes in December 2004, describing an accelerator cable assembly
defect that could present a stuck throttle risk.
Mazda & which sold a nearly identical vehicle & also recalled 121,000
Tribute SUVs in December 2004.& In October 2005, Ford sent
dealers an updated repair procedure with updated illustrations and a warning to
help prevent damage to the speed control cable while performing the accelerator
cable replacement procedure. Mazda never updated its procedures.& But Ford
never disclosed the updated procedure to the owners of more than 300,000
Escape owners that received repairs.
&The defective accelerator cable caused high idles, but the damaged cruise
control cable caused far worse open-throttle accelerations by breaking the
cruise cable protective guide which allowed the connector end of the cable to
jam against the engine cover,& said Center for Automotive Safety executive
director ..in a July 10 letter to Ford CEO ..that urged a new recall. Ford
didn't immediately comment on the investigation. NHTSA doesn't comment on
pending investigations.
NHTSA has identified 99 reports alleging incidents of stuck
Escape and Mazda Tribute sport utility vehicles built with V6 engines. Of the
total, 68 reports are from owners of Ford E 31 are from owners of model
year 2001 through 2004 Mazda Tributes.
Some of the complaints say the failure was caused by interference between the
speed control cable and the appearance cover at the throttle body cam. Many say
the failures may have been related to repairs performed as part of safety
recalls initiated in 2004.
The investigation follows a petition filed this month by the Center for Auto
Safety questioning whether thousands of
Escape vehicles may been
damaged during a recall fix.
When Ford sent its dealers the update in October 2005, Ford had already
repaired 319,506 vehicles.
The Center for Auto Safety said a January 2012 crash in Payson, Ariz., that
killed 17-year-old Saige Bloom when her 2002 Ford Escape was the result of
sudden unintended acceleration linked to a faulty repair. It had been repaired
in January 2005, before the update.
NHTSA has been investigating the crash since early this year. It obtained the
police report and has sought additional information from the deceased driver's
The agency rejected a call from the safety advocacy group to hold a formal
hearing and said its decision to open a formal investigation was independent of
the group's request.
Sudden unintended acceleration drew nationwide headlines in 2009 and 2010
when Toyota Motor Corp. recalled more than 10 million vehicles worldwide for
sticking accelerator pedals and pedals trapped in floor mats. Toyota paid nearly
$50 million in fines for failing to recall vehicles in a timely fashion.

Escape vehicles manufactured from October 22, 1999, through
July 19, 2002, equipped with a brake master cylinder reservoir cap that could
leak brake fluid. If brake fluid leaks from the cap, it could come in contact
with the antilock brake system (abs) module wiring harness connector. Corrosion
can develop in the electrical connector leading to melting, smoke or a fire.
Dealers will replace the brake master cylinder reservoir cap and the abs
electrical system will be modified. Ford expects to notify owners starting the
week of January 23, 2012. Due to a parts delay, however, the remedy may not be
available at that time. If parts are not available, ford will instruct owners to
