我觉得能直译最好不意译，以及，"offered by a particular sub-field"这么长的后置定语，应该是同时修饰“intellectual excitement”和“theoretical debate”的，若只修饰后一个，感觉不均衡。我尝试翻译整句是：对英国社会学历史的一个解读是：学者们确实在追逐研究的赞助经费，但同时（他们在选择研究领域时）也在追逐特定研究的领域可以提供的那些被认为有潜力引发学术热情或理论探讨的东西。
研读英国社会学历史可以发现，研究资金和潜在的学术兴奋点或者某个特定分支领域引起的理论争论决定了学术研究的方向。
