Delete Yourself! is ground zero for Atari Teenage Riot and Digital Hardcore. Alec Empire and company blend ultra-fast jungle, quasi-political screaming, and anime samples into an angry, it really is hard to call Atari Teenage Riot anything more than a fun diversion. Delete Yourself! is quite harmless, never getting into anything more political than calling people Nazis. How's that for an obvious target? For all of the shouting and machine abuse, Delete Yourself! is remarkably tame. "Kids Are United !" isn't much of a call for revolution. There's an overall tinny sound to the song and most of the other tracks, which keeps the music from being the dynamic beast it could have been. Constant boasting that "Atari Teenage Riot is number one" gets old over 12 songs. Throw in a rather lame imitation of Laika on "Sex" and a somewhat unsuccessful sampling of the Sex Pistols on "Delete Yourself! You Got No Chance to Win!," and Atari Teenage Riot seem to be grasping at straws for an original sound. Artists such as Kid 606 have taken the blueprint set by Atari Teenage Riot and made it pe Kid 606's mantra of "Free Kevin Mitnick" on Down With the Scene packs more interest and fire into one song that Atari Teenage Riot did on the entirety of Delete Yourself! The album isn't nearly as shocking or innovative as it purports to be, in large part due to the boasting and insincerity inherent in the band's attack. Halfway through, the songs become self-parody. Alec Empire's solo release, The Destroyer, actually puts Atari Teenage Riot's debut to shame, presenting fierce, demented jungle. Delete Yourself! is fun, but it screams zeitgeist more than riot, as it lacks emotion and payoff.

Fifty-one adolescent-onset AN cases, originally recruited after community screening, and 51 matched controls (COMP) were interviewed regarding somatic problems and SIB and physically examined 18 years after AN onset, at mean age 32 years. Six individuals had an eating disorder (ED). No one had died. The AN group weighed less than the COMP group. The frequency of somatic problems did not differ between groups. Dental enamel lesions and shorter than expected stature occurred only in the AN group. Dysdiadochokinesis was overrepresented in the AN group and age of AN onset was lower among those with the neurological deficit. Severe SIB occurred only in the AN group, predominantly during adolescence. To conclude, somatic problems were common in both groups. Most individuals in the AN group had recovered from their ED, but weight revealed a persistent restricted eating behaviour.PMID:

Some of the more awkward growth spurts that mark adolescence occur in the brain, and a new study suggests certain developmental changes might make teens ultra-sensitive to the gaze of other people.
Teens are famous for their self-consciousness and suspicion that everyone is watching them. In the new study, compared with children and adults, teens who thought one of their peers was looking at them experienced much stronger emotional, physiological and neural reactions, the researchers found.
In their experiment, 69 participants, ranging in age from 8 to 22 years old, were told they would be testing a new video camera as they lied down in a
machine. The participants were told a same-sex peer of similar age would be watching the video feed in another room. There was not actually a camera in the brain-scanning machine, but the participants had a screen in front of them indicating whether the camera was off, warming up, or on.
&We were concerned about whether simply being looked at was a strong enough 'social evaluation' to evoke emotional, physiological and neural responses,& study researcher Leah Somerville, a psychological scientist at Harvard University, said in a statement. &Our findings suggest that being watched, and to some extent anticipating being watched, were sufficient to elicit
emotional responses at each level of measurement.&
Those levels of measurement included the participants' self-reported embarrassment, physiological arousal, and activation in the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), a late-developing region of the brain, the researchers said.
&Our study identifies adolescence as a unique period of the life span in which self-conscious emotion, physiological reactivity, and activity in specific brain areas converge and peak in response to being evaluated by others,& Somerville added.
The brain scans also revealed that teens had greater connectivity between the MPFC and striatum, an area thought to be involved in motivated behaviors and actions. This pathway could be the route by which social evaluation influences behavior for teens, which could explain why they tend to engage in
when they are with their peers, Somerville and colleagues say.
The findings are detailed in the journal Psychological Science.
