A program of American music about the pleasures of dining, featuring songs by Barber, Berg, Bernstein, Bolcom, Porter and Schwartz, as well as Mirror Visions commission Clean Plates Don’t Lie, a cantata by Richard Pearson Thomas inspired by the menus and philosophy of renowned chef Dan Barber. The Mirror Visions Ensemble will be joined by guests Richard Pearson Thomas (piano), Naho Parrini (violin) and Alberto Parrini (cello).
As The New York Times aptly stated, “Unlike most chamber music enterprises, the Mirror Visions Ensemble is run by singers rather than instrumentalists, and its programs are shaped with an ear to the poetry of song texts rather than to overarching notions of musical style.”
Since its inception, Mirror Visions Ensemble’s work has figured prominently around performing and commissioning musical ‘mirror visions’ – multiple settings of the same text by one or more composers.
What began as an idea built around programs of poets such as Dickinson, Heine, Shakespeare and Verlaine has since expanded to include the commissioning of over 80 works from 24 composers.
Mirror Visions’ performances often recreate the salon or soiree musical settings made popular during the 19th century.
Rooted in commissioned works for vocal chamber music ensemble, founder and artistic director Tobé Malawista, along with the musicians, curate each concert to introduce composers, poets and historical figures not only through their published works, but also through correspondence and other anecdotes woven throughout each performance.

Kathleen Supové is one of America's most acclaimed and versatile contemporary music pianists, known for continually redefining what it means to be a pianist/keyboardist/performance artist in today's world. In addition to her compelling virtuosity, she is also known for her boundary-breaking ways of breaking the wall between performer and audience. After winning top prizes in the Gaudeamus International Competition for Interpretation of Contemporary Music, she began her career as a guest artist at the prestigious Darmstadt Festival in Germany. Since then, Ms. Supové has presented solo concerts entitled The Exploding Piano, in which she has championed the music of countless contemporary composers—minimalists, postminimalists, and experimentalists. The most notable are Frederic Rzewski, Louis Andriessen, Terry Riley, Chinary Ung, Giacinto Scelsi, Iannis Xenakis, John Adams, and Alvin Curran, as well as younger composers including Randall Woolf, David Lang, Nick Didkovsky, Eve Beglarian, Daniel Bernard Roumain, John Zorn, Carolyn Yarnell, Phil Kline, Lukas Ligeti, Kitty Brazelton, Aaron Jay Kernis, Mary Ellen Childs, Michael Daugherty, Marti Epstein, Patrick Grant, Eleanor Sandresky, Dan Becker, Elaine Kaplinsky, Dafna Naphtali, Jed Distler, Nicholas Brooke, Lois V Vierk, Marita Bolles, Gene Pritsker, Robert Carl, Rob Zuidam, Belinda Reynolds and many others. She is also involved in commissioning projects with even younger, emerging composers such as the iconoclastic Michael Gatonska, singer/performance artist Corey Dargel, composer/video v.j. Peter Kirn, and Gameboy composer Bubblyfish.
Composer Neil Rolnick pioneered in the use of computers in musical performance, beginning in the late 1970s. Rolnick has often included unexpected and unusual combinations of materials and media in his music. He has performed his music around the world, exploring forms as diverse as digital sampling, interactive multimedia, and acoustic vocal, chamber and orchestral works. Throughout the 1980s and &90s he was responsible for the development of the first integrated electronic arts graduate and undergraduate programs in the US, at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute&s iEAR Studios, in Troy, NY.
Though much of Rolnick&s work connects music and technology, and is therefore considered in the realm of &experimental& music, his music has always been highly melodic and accessible. Whether working with electronic sounds, improvisation, or multimedia, his music has been characterized by critics as &sophisticated,& &hummable and engaging,& and as having &good senses of showmanship and humor.&
