Things are going great in Cannes(戛纳), France. I have an
exciting experience here. I have only been here at the film festival for two
days, but I have already seen four films. When the films are not on, I like to
go to watch the fashionable people on the beach. Everywhere you look, there are
famous film stars and directors. I saw three of my favourite stars hanging out
at the festival yesterday. 83 However, I was too nervous to
talk to them.
At this year’s Cannes Film
Festival, about twenty films are competing for the main prize, the Palme d’Or(金棕榈奖).
The films are from all over the world―Europe, Asia, North America, Africa…
There are also so many
different types of films, and lots of them are from countries which are not
famous for the film making business. 84 For someone who loves films,
this is heaven(天堂)!
If you come to the festival, the
following suggestions will be helpful. First, you’ll need to remember to bring
your invitation, because you cannot watch any of the films without one.
Second, you’ll need to
bring some nice clothes. During the day everyone walks around in T-shirts and
shorts. But in the evening, everyone has to wear formal(正式的)
clothes. I am wearing a long dress all the time!

Question: First trip to the USAFor my new job, I will travel to the United States next month and meet my American boss. This will be my first trip there. I’m worried about correct business behavior and manners. My boss invited me to his home for dinner. Do you have any advice
Sue,Miami Posted,3 days ago
Re: First trip to the USAIt’s a good idea to bring a small gift or something from your country. Don’t be surprised if your boss opens the gift right away. In the USA, people often open a gift when they receive it. In Korea, that is not polite, but it’s common in the USA。

Re: First trip to the USAAmericans use their hands to eat some kinds of food, such as pizza and fried chicken. Watch your American hosts, and do what they do.

Re: First trip to the USAIn Korea and Japan, it’s the custom to remove your shoes before entering a house. In the United States, you usually don’t take your shoes off. Once I was travelling in Japan and entered a house with my shoes on by mistake. Oops!
LeeKorea Posted,2 hours ago
Re: First trip to the USAMany Americans are very informal(非正式的)at home. One time I went to an American business partner’s home for dinner, I was surprised that everyone stood and talked in the kitchen while the husband and wife were cooking dinner. Besides, unlike in Korea, everyone took part in the dinner table conversation, even the man’s wife and children.
Andrew,Washington Posted,1 hour ago
Re: First trip to the USAI agree with Lee. You probably won’t speak about business during dinner, so my advice is to know some topics of conversation. For example, you can talk about travel, food, music, or sports. But you’d better not question about age.

Cellphones help us easily
find people anywhere at any time. However, using cellphones too often may cause
cancer. (61) It’s reported that people who used a cellphone for 10 years or
more were more likely to get brain cancer.
The suggestions below may
help you reduce the risk(风险) of cancer:
◆When using your cellphone,
try to keep it away from your body as much as possible. Don’t put it under your
pillow(枕头) or on a bedside table when you sleep.
◆When you’re on the
cellphone, use the speaker. In this way, you have just 1/100th of
the contact with radiation you have when you hold (63) it to your ear. An earphone is also a good idea.
◆Try to keep your
conversations short. If you need to talk longer, use an ordinary phone instead.
◆Change ears when you’re
using your cellphone. Before putting it to your ear, wait until the person you
are calling picks up the phone.
◆Your phone gives out
radiation when you talk or text, but not when you’re listening or getting
messages. (64) 多听和少说能降低癌症风险。
◆Do not use your cellphone
when the signal is weak or when moving at a high speed, for example in a car or

Learn to relax. Overwork is the
main reason why so many students feel tired and stressed. Cut down some of the
jobs you need to do each day so that you can only focus on the most important
things. Leave time for activities that are relaxing and fun. This might mean
reading a good book, listening to the music, going for a walk or taking a
relaxing bath.
Get a good night’s sleep. Getting
enough sleep will help you keep your body and mind in the best form. If you
stay up late and need to get up early for school the next day, you may not be
able to concentrate on the things you need to do.
Exercise regularly and eat well. Don’t rush
through your meals. Eat less junk food or fast food. Eat healthy food instead.
Get to know pleasant people. Some people are
optimistic, while others not. Choose optimistic people as your friends and
spend more time with them and you’ll be as happy as them.
Learn to be calm when you face any problem. Find
out the best option from those that are in your mind. Knowing that you are able
to solve problems is a good way to build up your self-confidence.

To us, it seems so natural to put
up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But in fact the umbrella
was not invented as protection against the rain. Its first use was as a shade(遮蔽)
against the sun.
knows who first invented it, but the umbrella
was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese,
back in the eleventh century BC.
We know that the umbrella was used in
ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there
was a strange thing
connected with its use : it became a symbol of honor and power(权力). In the
Far East in ancient
times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by those in high office or by
royal people such as the kings or queens.
In Europe, the Greeks were the first to
use the umbrella as a sunshade. The umbrella was in
common use in ancient
Greece, but it is believed that the first people in Europe to use the
as protection against
the rain were the ancient Romans. During the middle ages in Europe, the use
of the umbrella almost
disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century.
And again it became a symbol of power.
Umbrellas have not changed much in
style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It
wasn't until the twentieth century that the umbrellas for women began to be
made in all kinds of colors.
