近代翻译文学是中国翻译文学的重要组成部分,同时也是近代中国文学的重要组成部分。中国近代翻译文学,是近代中国文学书写重要的参照系,并且成为了中国人走向世界,寻求民族自省和更生的一种方式,近代文学翻译活动和近代社会思想的变革与风尚的转移的构成了互动关系。近代中国最重要的一个译介外国文化的群体即留学国外的中国学子,外语知识和技能的掌握,以及对直接接触外国文化的直接感知,近代留学生的大量出现使大规模的文学翻译活动成为可能。在中国近代翻译文学中,俄罗斯文学的翻译占据了很大的比例,俄罗斯文学之所以得到中国留学生的特别关注,是因为俄罗斯文学,特别是19世纪文学所反映的俄罗斯民族的生存境遇颇类似于中国的现实和民众的生存状况,而晚清“反清排满”思想又使得留学生对俄罗斯文学表现虚无党人反抗沙皇统治的精神颇为青睐。值得注意的是,介绍到近代中国的俄罗斯文学大多并非直接翻译自俄文,而是通过中介国的译本转译而来,其中绝大部分通过日译本转译,因此,近代中国留日学生为俄罗斯文学的翻译贡献甚大。这一文学文本旅行的过程,呈现了多重的又耐人寻味的文化镜像,既涉及到中国留日学生在选择翻译俄罗斯文学作品时受限于日本翻译俄罗斯文学的范围,受限于日本对俄罗斯文学的价值判断和审美选择,而且涉及到中日两国的历史和现实的关系,以及中国留日学生的日本体验等复杂的问题,通过对这一特殊文学现象的审视,在一定意义上,可以了解中国近代翻译繁盛的社会历史原因,也可以透视中国在努力步入世界的过程中,中国近代知识分子充满了屈辱和期待的心路历程。本文对近代小说翻译进行的研究不是传统的以语言分析和文本对照为主的研究,而是借鉴西方翻译研究学派的文化研究方法论对近代小说翻译活动进行分析和解释,探讨译者(即近代留日学生)对译本的选择和翻译策略的选择,挖掘其产生的社会历史原因和文化动力,揭示翻译文学对近现代文学创作所产生的深刻影响,以及近代中国俄罗斯文学的翻译活动对五四以后的翻译文学的影响。
