Smoking in indoor public places including
public working places,public
transport vehicles and some other special outdoor working places has been
banned(禁止)in
China since January 2011.Let's look at the following advantages of banning
smoking.
First, banning smoking will not only help in
saving smokers from health problems and diseases, but will also be good for passive
smokers. When the smoker is smoking in a restaurant, the people around him are sure to breathe
in the smoke and suffer from the diseases an active smoker gets. If smoking is
banned,spread of
these diseases can be controlled.
Next, banning smoking will put stress on
smokers to give up. Since a smoker is prevented from smoking,he will learn how to live
without smoking for long hours. When a smoker doesn't smell or see anybody
around him smoking,it
might reduce his wish to smoke too. As a result, people have to give up smoking.
Smoking in public places influences non&smokers
to start smoking,especially
adolescents.When
teens see people around them smoking, they will follow them easily. Thus the number of teen
smokers will increase. Also asthma(哮喘)and other problems are often seen in children living around
smokers. So if it is banned, these
places will become safe for children and teenagers.
Looking from the economic point of view, smoking should be banned to
increase work productivity. Employees(雇员)who smoke usually take breaks to smoke
while working. So the number of hours they put in their work is smaller.
If you see from the environment point of view, smoking should be banned.
Smoking causes air pollution. If it is banned,it will help keep the environment from
getting worse.
1.How many advantages of banning
smoking are mentioned in this passage?
A.Two.& &&&&&&&&&&&& B.Four.& &&&&&&&&&&& C.Five.& &&&&&&&&&&& D.Six.
2.What does Paragraph 2 mainly
want to tell us?
A.Banning smoking is good for restaurants.
B.Banning smoking is good for non&smokers.
C.Banning smoking is good for spread of
D.Banning smoking is good for active
smokers and passive smokers.
3.What does the underlined word
“adolescents” probably mean in the passage?
A.men& &&&&&&& B.women& & C.adults& &&&&&&&&&& D.teenagers

PE classes usually mean running, jumping and playing ball games. But students at Aspire Middle School in Lacey, Washington spend their PE classes doing yoga.
&PE has been either dance or yoga since we started,& said the headmaster Monica Sweet. &They're both very popular classes.&
Teacher Anne Kohlbry developed the yoga program and began teaching it when the school opened in 2009. Each class lasts about 50 minutes. It includes some warm-up activities such as walking laps(跑道的圈) around the school, controlled breathing, stretches (伸展) and a few minutes of relaxation.
Kohlbry usually plays classical music while students stretch on yoga mats. They practice several classic poses. For example, to do the mountain pose, students stand tall with feet together. They take a deep breath and raise their hands over their head. Their palms(手掌) face each other with arms straight. Then they try to reach up toward the sky with their fingertips.
When doing yoga, students need to be calm and find the balance of their bodies. It helps them focus, according to Kohlbry.
&Focus is a big thing-middle school kids are so distracted(分心的),” she told the local newspaper The Olympian.
Yoga also makes students healthier.
&I've had a lot of kids saying,
'Madam, I've developed a six-pack muscle(肌肉 )' because we do a lot of strength training,& she said.
Eighth-grader Jessica Wallingford, 14, likes the class. &In the two years that I've been here, there are a lot of things I've improved on. It's pretty cool. It's better than running laps,& she said.
&It feels like exercise,& said Thomas Shiveley, 11. &It's not tiring, but it's good exercise.&1. PE classes at Aspire Middle School are special because the students are asked to_______.

&We can make mistakes at any
age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But
most mistakes are about people.“Did Jerry really care when I broke up with
Helen?“When I got that great job,did Jim really
feel good about it,as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?”“And
why wasn’t Paul friendly just because I had a car?”When
we look back, thoughts like these can make us feel bad.But
when we look back,it’s too late.
& Why do we go wrong about our
friends? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And
if we don’t really listen。we miss the
feeling behind the words.Sometimes someone tells you,“You’re
a lucky dog.”That’s friendly.But“lucky
dog”?There’s a bit of envy in those words.Maybe
he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the“dog”puts
you down a little. What he may be saying is that he does’t think
that you can have such good luck.
& ‘‘Just think of all the
things you have to be thankful for’’is another example that says one thing and
means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get
you to see your problem as part of your life. But is he? It’s
telling you to think of all the hungry people in the whole world when you
haven’t got a date(约会)for Saturday night.
& How can you tell the real
meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person
talking.Do his words fit the way he looks? Dose what he
says agree with the tone(语调)of voice? His posture(姿态)?
The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend
thinking about the real meaning of the words may save another mistake.

Is it brave or embarrassing to speak in a language you’re not quite good at? That’s the question being asked in China after a famous businessman gave a short speech in English.
It was a pretty standard conversation: &Hello. How are you?& in our textbook, But the fact is that it was given in English by one of China’s most famous businessmen, Lei Jun, the founder and chief executive of the phone company Xiaomi, the world’s third-largest maker of smartphones. He made a speech in awkward English when he was in India for a new smartphone in April. Trying to interact (互动) with the audience, Lei announced that everyone would be given a free Xiaomi smart wristband(腕带)and asked: &Are you OK?& The phrase quickly became the object of ridicule(嘲笑)on social media. And it didn’t take long for his speech to be made into a rap song, repeating the phrase: &Are you OK?&In fact, Lei’s English was more or less understandable, though his pronunciation is bad. Video of the event has been watched more than 450,000 times on the Chinese site Youku. More than a thousand people wrote their ideas after watching. One of the comments(评论)is &His English is so bad that he shouldn’t have spoken in it at all.& But others argued that Lei was brave enough to speak English in India. &Even foreigners will try to be friendly with us by trying to speak in Chinese.&
English is taught as the second language in many Chinese schools, but some schools and students don’t pay enough attention to the pronunciation and can just speak like robots. Lei himself has written something on his Weibo page to express surprise at the online interest. &I went on stage and spoke several sentences in English only to make Indian Xiaomi fans excited. I have never thought video of the speech will spread to China so quickly. Everyone in China is laughing. Dear Lily,You must be surprised when you receive my letter, for we’ve been good friends for so long, so there is no need for us to write to each other. However, I would still like to express my thanks to you. In the past three years, what I remember the most clearly is a P.E. class when we were doing the 800-meter running exercise, During the exercise, I breathed(呼吸) so heavily that I hurt my throat. It seemed as if a fire was burning inside and I almost couldn’t take in air. At that moment, I was so scared that I thought I was going to die. Have you ever seen a rainbow(彩虹) ? How beautiful it is!It’s said that whenever you see a rainbow you should run at once to the place where it touches the ground, and there you would find gold. Of course it is not true, You could not find the gold or its end. No matter how far you run, it always seems far away.A rainbow is not a thing which we can feel with our hands as we can feel a flower. It is only the effect of light shining on raindrops, The raindrops catch the sunlight and break it up into all the wonderful colors which we see. It is called a rainbow perhaps because it is made up of raindrops and looks like a bow (弓).That is why we can never see a rainbow in a clear sky. We see a rainbow only when there is rain in the air and the sun is shining brightly through the clouds.Every rainbow has many colors in the same order. Do American children still learn
handwriting in school? In the age of the keyboard, some people seem to think
handwriting lessons are on the way out. 90% of teachers say they are required
to teach handwriting. But studies have yet to answer the question of how well
they are teaching it. One of this year’s studies found that about three out of
every four teachers say they are not prepared to teach handwriting. Some
teachers are teaching handwriting by providing instruction for 10 to 15 minutes
a day, and then other teachers who basically teach it for 60 to 70 minutes a
day — which really for handwriting is pretty much.
Many adults remember learning that way — by
copying letters over and over again. Today’s thinking is that short periods of
practice are better. Many experts(专家) also think
handwriting should not be taught by itself. Instead, they say it should be used
as a way to get students to express ideas. After all, that is why we write.
Handwriting involves two skills. One is legibility,
which means forming the letters so they can be read. The other is fluency(流畅) — writing without having to think about it. Fluency
continues to develop up until high school.
But not everyone masters these skills.
Teachers commonly report that about one fourth of their kids have poor
handwriting. Some people might think handwriting is not important any more
because of computers and voice recognition programs.
But Steve Graham at Vanderbilt says word
processing is seldom done in primary school, especially in the early years.
American children traditionally first learn to print, and then to write in
cursive, which connects the letters. But guess what we learned from a spokeswoman
for the College Board(大学委员会). More than 75 percent of students choose
to print their essay(article) on the test rather than write in cursive.
