There is not any bread left. &&&&&&& There isn't anything I can do for you. There can't be so many mistakes. &&&&&&& There shouldn't be any doubt about it. &&&&&&& There haven't been any parties in weeks. There doesn't seem to have been any difficulty over the money question. Is there any good film on? &&&&&&& Is there room for me in the car? &&&&&&& Are there any letters for me? Has there been an accident? &&&&&&& Have there been any new developments? &&&&&&& Can there have been so much rain there? Uncle Jesse, why do there have to be poor people like those? There is a man at the door. &&&&&&& There are some girls in the room. &&&&&&& There is a pen and some books on the desk. There is going to be[will be] an English film tonight. &&&&&&& There was a lot to be done. &&&&&&& There were some children swimming in the river. &&&&&&& There have been many such accidents. &&&&&&& There had been two seafights between them. There may be a storm tomorrow. &&&&&&& There used to be a hospital here. &&&&&&& He felt there must be something wrong. &&&&&&& There might still be hope. &&&&&&& There ought to be a comma here. 4、动词be换成其他动词:有时可将there be中的动词:be换为live, remain, seem, appear, exist, stand, lie, come等: 如:Once upon a time there lived a man known by the name of Joe Beef. &&&&&&&&&There seems[appears] something the matter with her. &&&&&&& There existed different opinions on this problem. &&&&&&& There remained just twenty-eight pounds. &&&&&&& At the top of the hill there stands an old temple. There seemed to be nobody about, so I went in. &&&&&&& There happened to be a man walking by.

experience British culure.Last week we all went to see a musical and this weekend we are going to visit Stratford for the day.We have also been promised a weekend in Paris next spring!Of course,I'm working hard as well as having fun. With class sizes of less than fifteen there is no chance of being able to avoid the teachers. As well as learning English we are also taught how to study by ourselves. That should make it easier when I get to university. For such a friendly place, the Frances King School is very large.Students come from all over the world to learn here, from Europe and South away very soon―within an hour of dying. This behavior is interesting to scientists, who wonder how ants know for sure―and so soon ―that another ant is dead. One scientist recently came up with a way to explain this ant behavior.Dong&Hwan Choe is a biologist.Choe found that Argentine ants have a chemical on the outside of their bodies that signals to other ants,“I'm dead―take me away.”But there's a twist to Choe's discovery.Choe says that the living ants―not just the dead ones―have this death chemical. In other words, while an ant crawls around, perhaps in a picnic or home,it's telling other ants that it's dead. What keeps ants from dragging away the living ants?Choe found that Argentine ants have two additional chemicals on their bodies, and these tell nearby ants something like,“Wait―I'm not dead yet.” So Choe's research turned up two sets of chemical signals in ants:one says,“I'm dead,” and the other set says,“I'm not dead yet.”Other scientists have tried to figure out how ants know when another ant is dead.If an ant is knocked unconscious, for example, other ants leave it alone until it wakes up.That means ants know that unmoving ants can still be alive.Choe suspects that when an Argentine ant dies, the chemical that says“Wait―I'm not dead yet” quickly goes away.Once that chemical is gone, only the one that says“I'm dead”is left.“It's because the dead ant no longer smells like a living ant that it gets carried to the graveyard, not because its body releases new unique chemicals after death,”said Choe. When other ants detect the “dead” chemical without the “not dead yet” chemical, they drag away the body.Understanding this behavior may help scientists figure out how to stop Argentine ants from invading new places and causing problems.Choe would like to find a way to use the newly discovered chemicals to spread ant killer to Argentine ant nests. The ants' removal behavior is important to the overall health of the nest.“Being able to quickly remove dead individuals dream about working in a building of their own.And making that dream come true often means finding a building no one else seems to want, which is exactly what happened to David Yocum and his partner,Brian Bell.Their building is a former automobile electrical&parts firm in Atlanta. From the outside,it looks too old, even something horrible, but open the door and you are in a wide, open courtyard, lined on three sides with rusting(生锈的)walls. In 2000,Yocum and Bell found this building in the city's West End.Built in 1947,the structure had been abandoned years earlier and the roof of the main building had fallen down. But the price was right,so Yocum bought it.He spent eight months of his off&hours on demolition(拆除),pulling rubbish out through the roof, because it was too dangerous to go inside the building. The demolition was hard work, but it gave him time to think about what he wanted to do,and “to treasure what was there―the walls, the rust, the light.”Yocum said.“Every season, more paint falls off the walls and more rust develops. It's like an art installation(装置)in there―a slow&motion show.”Since the back building had been constructed without windows,an all&glass front was added to the building to give it a view of the courtyard, and skylights were installed in the roof. The back of the building is a working area and living room for Yocum and his wife.A sort of buffer(缓冲)zone between the front and the back contains a bathroom,a kitchen and a mechanical room, and the walls that separate these zones have openings that allow views through to the front of the studio and the courtyard beyond.Yocum and Bell, who have just completed an art gallery for the city, feel that the experience from the decoration of their building, focusing on the inside rather than the outside, has influenced their work.It has also given these architects a chance to show how they can make more out of less.60.According to the passage,it is________for most young architects in big cities to work in a building of their own.A.easy &B.unnecessary& C.unrealistic &D.common解析 细节理解题。由第一段第一句中...can only dream about working in a building of their own.可知C项正确。答案 C61.Yocum bought the old building because________.A.it was a bargain to himB.it was still in good conditionC.it was located in the city centerD.it looked attractive from the outside解析 事实细节题。由第二段中But the price was right,so Yocum bought it.(价格合理,他就买下了)可知A项正确。答案 A62.Working on the old building,Yocum and Bell________.A.pulled rubbish out through the roofB.removed the skylights from the bathroomC.presented a slow&motion show in an art galleryD.built a kitchen at the back part of the old building解析 事实理解题。由第二段中...pulling rubbish out through the roof...可知。答案 A63.It can be inferred from the passage that Yocum and Bell________.A.benefited a lot from pulling down the roofB.turned more old buildings into art galleriesC.got inspiration from decorating their old buildingD.paid more attention to the outside of the art gallery答案 CCIt's happened to all of us:we sleeplessly toss and turn while the person next door snores(打呼噜)his way through the night.“Millions of people snore, most of the men over the age of 20,”said Robert Bone, chief of Head and Neck Surgery and Otology at Scripps Clinic in San Diego.“As many as 45 percent of people snore, and as many as 25 percent are chronic(慢性的)snorers.Male snorers far outnumber women who snore.”To help chronic snores―and their partners and family―get a good night's sleep,Dr. Bone treats his patients with Somnoplasty,a now&proven procedure that he pioneered at Scripps Clinic six years ago.“If you snore loudly and frequently and do not have other breathing disorders,Somnoplasty may be the solution for you,”he said.Somnoplasty uses low&temperature radio waves to treat a well&defined area in the soft palate(腭).A small prong is inserted into the mouth toward the back of the throat. Then radio&frequency energy is delivered beneath the surface of the soft palate. The treated tissue is heated just enough to create an area of coagulation(凝结物).Over the next four to six weeks, the body naturally tears off the treated tissue, reducing volume and solidifying the area responsible for snoring. The procedure takes place in the doctor's office, and typically lasts no longer than 15 to 20 minutes.Patients need two to four treatments, and the procedure is 80 percent effective.Treatment costs $200 to $300 and is covered by some insurance.Dr. Bone treats about 800 patients a year.“Somnoplasty is the state&of&the&art procedure for snoring,”Dr Bone said.“It can provide much&needed relief to chronic snorers and their families.”For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (858) 554&8964.64.Which of the following is true about the snorers according to Robert Bone?A.45% of the snorers are men who are over the age of 20.B.Thousands of people are chronic snorers.C.People who toss and turn sleeplessly will never snore.D.There are far more male snorers than female snorers.答案 D65.We can learn from the passage that________.A.the procedure of Somnoplasty takes place easily and costs lessB.the procedure of Somnoplasty is totally safeC.almost every snorer can be cured with SomnoplastyD.Dr. Bone earns at least $160,000 a year答案 A66.The fifth paragraph aims to tell us________.A.the causes of snoringB.the suffering of the treatmentC.the complexity of the treatmentD.the procedure of Somnoplasty答案 DDExposure to environmental tobacco smoke(ETS)―also called“second&hand smoke” and&& “passive smoking” contains over 4,000 chemicals, including over 50 known carcinogens (致癌物)and many poisonous things. No safe level of ETS exposure has been proved.Nor is there any expectation that further research will identify such a level.Several recent reviews have confirmed the serious risks to health and life associated with passive smoking.Long time exposure to second&hand smoke has been proved as a cause of many of the same diseases caused by active smoking, including lung cancer, cardiovascular(心脏血管的)disease, and childhood disease.Living with a smoker has been shown to increase the risk of coronary heart disease(冠心病)among non&smokers by 25-30% (a recent study indicates that this figure may actually be higher). There is also growing evidence that passive smoking is causally linked to stroke in non&smokers, although further research is needed to estimate the risk.Second&hand smoke is especially dangerous for young children and infants, being associated with sudden infant death, pneumonia, bronchitis(支气管炎),asthma(哮喘)and respiratory symptoms as well as middle ear disease.ETS exposure in pregnant women can cause lower birth weight, foetal (胎儿的)death and preterm delivery. Most of the adverse health outcomes brought about by ETS show that the risk increases steadily with increasing exposure. The level of individual risk is lower compared to active smoking.Nevertheless, the fact that large numbers of people are exposed results in a substantial burden of disease.Action on smoke&free environments would not& only protect people from the harm of ETS exposure but also contribute to the reduction of tobacco consumption in the whole population. The health effects of reduced passive and active smoking would include reduced illness and death from major disease types&in particular lung cancer, coronary heart disease, and stroke―and increased life expectancy.【解题导语】 ETS也就是二手烟含有很多的化学成分,特别是致癌物质,给人们带来了很大的危害。67.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Although ETS contains many harmful things,it is not unsafe.B.The fact that second&hand smoke is safe has been recently found.C.It is expected that further research will be done to test the level of ETS.D.By far the safe level of ETS has not been found and will not in the future.解析 细节理解题。根据文章第一段中“No safe level of ETS exposure has been proved.”可知应选D项。答案 D68.Cardiovascular disease can be caused by ________.A.long time passive smokingB.accidental active smokingC.occasional passive smokingD.short term active smoking解析 细节理解题。根据文章第二段第二句的内容可知,长期被动吸烟可以引起心脏血管疾病。答案 A69.According to the increase the risk of this disease by 25―30%C.for the smokers, the risk of getting this disease is higher than that of the nonsmokersD.the non&smokers exposed to smoke will be more easily to get this disease than the smokers解析 细节理解题。由第三段第一句话“和吸烟者生活在一起会增加25%~30%得冠心病的可能性”可知,B项是正确的。答案 B70.What does the underlined word “delivery” mean?A.Transferring to another. &B.Giving birth.C.Throwing away.
