爬山虎有脚，可以在垂直的墙面上攀援，这样一来，叶子就会因为统一受到重力的作用而叶尖朝下，除了那些叶子特别坚硬的、特别小的少数物种外，因为我们看爬山虎的角度跟我们抬头看别的树不同，所以看起来似乎就有一种别致的感觉。
它们的叶子铺得那么均匀的原因，是因为植物中叶子有镶嵌的作用，也就是它们会尽可能地利用空隙来获取更多的阳光，不同的叶片会参差分布，保证彼此都能得到均匀的光照。其实也不光是爬山虎有这种情况，如果你从一棵树的上方看下来，叶子的镶嵌作用同样是存在的。
