H O L I D A YCHINA DAILYFEBRUARY 16 - 17, 200811Seles ? nally gives up on reviving former gloriesin 1993, calls it quits due to foot injuriesDELRAY BEACH, Florida: Monica Seles’s brilliant career, disrupted by a stabbing and cut short by injury, ended quietly on Thursday. The former world No 1 may never have fully recovered from being stabbed by a spectator during a match in 1993 but it was injuries that stopped her making a comeback, as well as a stubborn refusal to return at a level below her best.“Tennis has been and will always be a huge part of my life,” Seles said. “I have for some time considered a re-turn to professional play, but I have now decided not to pursue that.”Seles, 34, last played a competitive match at the 2003 French Open but thoughts of a comeback were never far from her mind.“My personal theory is, if you’re retired, you’re retired,” she told the Houston Chronicle last year. “You don’t come back. And I don’t feel like I’m ready to say that.“I’m in such good shape. I only wish I was in this good a shape when I was playing. It’s hard to accept that, just because of an injury, you’re ? nished.”Equally hard to accept was the fear that she may return to the court a pale shadow of her former self.Lindsay Davenport, another for-mer world No 1 who made her own comeback last year, said in 2005 that she did not expect Seles to return because she would not accept lower standards.“I think she loved her last year and won’t go out there and play unless she’s the good Monica that’s everyone’s used to,” Davenport said.Perhaps Seles, world No 1 for a total of 178 weeks, was right. It would have been nearly impos-sible to recapture her former bril-liance and her nine Grand Slam titles will ensure she is remem-bered as one of the game’s greatest players.Born in the former Yugoslavia, Seles was among the pioneers along a path that has proved lucrative for many young players from Eastern Europe. She moved to Florida as a school-girl and attended the Nick Bollettieri Academy in Florida, which was later to be home to players including Rus-sian Maria Sharapova and Serbian Jelena Jankovic.“Monica Seles is one of the great champions in the history of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, and an inspira-tion and role model for millions of fans throughout the world,” WTA Tour chief executive Larry Scott said.“No one will ever forget the ? erce determination and will to win that Monica brought to the court, nor the caring and warm person that she has always been off the court.”Her early form on the WTA Tour was explosive, winning her ? rst tour-nament in Houston aged just 15 by beating multiple Grand Slam winner Chris Evert in the ? nal.During a remarkable 1991 she reached the ? nal of all 16 events sheExplosive startentered, winning 10 including theAustralian, French and US Opens.Indisputably the best player in the world and then the youngest to reach the top of the rankings, Seles was rarely comfortable in the media spotlight.Giggly in her teens, her infamous on-court grunt upset some fans but her grit, enthusiasm and superb two-handed groundstrokes won her widespread admiration. That turned to sympathy when Ger-man Guenter Parche thrust a kitchen knife into her shoulders as she rested during a quarter? nal match at the Hamburg Open.Parche, a fan of Seles’ great rival Stef?
Graf, received a suspended two-year sentence while Seles did not play for over two years. After becoming a US citizen in 1994, she won her ? rst tournament back, the 1995 Canadian Open. With the mental trauma of her attack seemingly behind her, vic-tory in the 1996 Australian Open suggested that Seles’ career might take off again. She regularly reached grand slam quarterfinals from
but only once made the ? nal and nearly six years later, frustrated by a succes-sion of foot injuries, Seles was ? nally forced to admit defeat.AgenciesMonica Seles holds her trophy and a toy Kangaroo after winning the women’s ? nal at the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne on January 27, 1996.
APTiger commits to golf in the GulfDUBAI: Tiger Wood’s breathtaking win in the Dubai Desert Classic last week has further sealed the emirate’s position at the hub of world golf’s rap-idly-changing landscape. The planet’s best-known sportsman has ? rmly linked the pull of his global celebrity with the stunning entrepre-neurism that has made Dubai such a magnet for the rich, famous and ambitious.Woods chose Dubai for the site of his ? rst venture into golf course design and he has already said that he will be back next year to defend his Classic title. The world No.1, though a gol? ng traditionalist at heart, happily admits that he is a convert to the brash ex-pansionism that is the mark of this desert oasis.“What they are doing is frankly phenomenal,” he said.“I haven’t seen anything like this and I don’t think really anyone, anywhere around the world has seen this type of growth and golf is one component of it.“Just in this area since the years I’ve been coming here, the skyline keeps changing, keeps evolvingand people keep coming here and thoroughly enjoy it.“I certainly think golf is a big draw here.”Woods of course is not alone among top players in jumping onto the Dubai bandwagon.Colin Montgomerie and Er-nie Els have already lent their names and design expertise to golf course development and Greg Norman, Vijay Singh and Sergio Garcia have joined their talents in drafting the stunning four course Jumeirah Golf Estates layout themed around Fire, Water, Earth and Air which is still under construction. The new additions will bring the total number of golf courses in and around Dubai up to around 20, a re-markable achievement for a country that depends on treated sea water to turn parched, barren land into glis-tening greenery. It’s all part of Dubai’s bold plan to use golf as a vehicle to lure tour-ists, businessmen and developers from Europe, the United States and Asia and it appears to be working. In a stunning development late last year, the European PGA Tourwhich had the foresight to spill out of its traditional frontiers 20 years ago when it organised the first Desert Classic in Dubai, an-nounced that its long-established Order of Merit contest would be retooled as The Race to Dubai as of next year. The climax to that would be what is being billed as the world’s rich-est golf tournament, a 10million dollar extravaganza known as the Dubai World Championships which will be held for the first time in November 2009 at Jumeirah Golf Estates. In keeping with that, the European PGA Tour has announced it is open-ing its new “international of? ces” in Dubai joining a growing exodus of sports organisations, such as the In-ternational Cricket Council, to make the move.Already this year, the Euro-pean Tour schedule has 14 events in Asia and the Middle East and only nine in Britain and Ireland sparking calls for it to be re-named in some way to reflect this globalisation. The flip side of this eastern expansionism is that some long-established tournaments like theFrench, Italian and Spanish Opens are struggling to attract the big names and doubts have been cast over their futures. Those who are not complaining, however, are the players such as Er-nie Els who are enjoying substantially bigger paydays and all-year round competition.“You can talk about a World Tour but The European Tour is already pretty much a world tour,” the South African said last week in New Delhi ahead of the inaugural Indian Mas-ters, another new frontier for the European Tour.“I think they have done a good job, done their homework through the years and made good relationships with other tours and other countriesand I think they have the basis of that now.“Obviously if you get the purses up you will get the players to come and play there as well and it is becoming bigger.“If you look at China and Asia and this region here and the Middle East, you can already play a full schedule without going to the US if you want to.”AFPSCOREBOARDNBANEW YORK: Thursday’s NBA results (home team in CAPS).PHOENIX 109 Dallas 97CHICAGO 99 Miami 92StandingsEASTERN CONFERENCEATLANTIC DIVISIONW L PCT GBBoston 41 9 .820 -Toronto 28 23 .549 13 1/2New Jersey 23 30 .434 19 1/2Philadelphia 23 30 .434 19 1/2NY Knicks 15 37 .288 27CENTRAL DIVISIONDetroit 39 13 .750 -Cleveland 29 23 .558 10Chicago 21 31 .404 18Indiana 21 32 .396 18 1/2Milwaukee 19 34 .358 20 1/2SOUTHEAST DIVISIONOrlando 33 21 .611 -Washington 25 27 .481 7Atlanta 21 28 .429 9 1/2Charlotte 19 34 .358 13 1/2Miami 9 42 .176 22 1/2WESTERN CONFERENCENORTHWEST DIVISIONUtah 34 19 .642 -Denver 32 20 .615 1 1/2Portland 28 24 .538 5 1/2Seattle 13 38 .255 20Minnesota 10 41 .196 23PACIFIC DIVISIONPhoenix 37 16 .698 -Boston 29 23 5 149 154 63Toronto 23 27 9 161 190 55SOUTHEAST DIVISIONCarolina 29 27 4 175 189 62Washington 27 25 6 166 179 60Atlanta 28 27 4 160 188 60Florida 26 27 6 159 168 58Tampa Bay 25 27 6 169 190 56WESTERN CONFERENCECENTRAL DIVISIONDetroit 41 13 5 194 130 87NHLNashville 30 23 6 170 162 66NEW YORK: NHL results on ThursdayColumbus 26 24 9 143 155 61(home team in CAPS):St. Louis 26 22 8 146 160 60Tampa Bay 5 PHILADELPHIA 3Chicago 26 25 6 163 163 58CAROLINA 4 Pittsburgh 2NORTHWEST DIVISIONNY Islanders 5 TORONTO 4Minnesota 33 21 4 162 156 70Chicago 6 NASHVILLE 1Calgary 29 20 8 165 164 66PHOENIX 5 Dallas 2Colorado 30 23 5 164 160 65St. Louis 4 COLORADO 1Vancouver 28 22 8 153 150 64Minnesota 5 VANCOUVER 4 (SO)Edmonton 27 27 5 158 174 59Edmonton 3 SAN JOSE 2PACIFIC DIVISION(SO) denotes shootout winDallas 35 21 5 178 153 75StandingsEASTERN CONFERENCEAnaheim 32 22 7 150 151 71ATLANTIC DIVISIONSan Jose 31 18 8 151 140 70 W L OTL GF GA PTSPhoenix 29 25 4 160 161 62Pittsburgh 32 21 5 170 158 69Los Angeles 24 32 3 167 194 51New Jersey 32 21 4 150 136 68Note: Overtime losses (OTL) are worth one Philadelphia 30 22 5 181 165 65point in the standings and are not included NY Rangers 28 24 7 144 147 63in the loss column (L)NY Islanders 26 25 7 143 171 59GOLFNORTHEAST DIVISIONOttawa 34 19 5 199 172 73USPGA Montreal 30 19 9 180 164 69LOS ANGELES, California: Scores here Buffalo 28 21 8 171 157 64Thursday after the ? We’ll ? le a corrected copy tomorrow,” said Josh Eaton, a spokesman for Russoniello. “Nothing nefari-ous is going on here.”Acting for the US govern-ment, Russoniello made the assertion in a document that asked a federal court to reject Bonds’ motion last month to dismiss the charges that he lied about past steroid use.Dennis Riordan, one of Bonds’ lawyers, said the slugger’s defense team would respond to the ? ling by next Thursday and declined to com-ment immediately. In December, the record seven-time National League Most Valuable Player pleaded not guilty to lying to a federal grand jury in 2003 when he denied using performance-en-hancing drugs. The left fielder testified in the BALCO sports steroid case, which ended up jailing his per-sonal trainer, Anderson, and Victor Conte, head of the BALCO lab near San Francisco.Bonds surged late in his ca-reer to break one of the greatest records in American sports ― the career record for home runs. He surpassed Hank Aaron in 2007 and ? nished the season seven homers ahead at 762.In 2001, he hit 73 home runs for the San Francisco Giants, the greatest display of power ever in a single season.Prosecutors have revealed lit-tle about the evidence they have in the case against Bonds, the greatest hitter of his era long dogged by suspicions about doping. The motion to dismiss the case has prompted prosecutors to reveal a bit more of their hand ― but not much, as they ulti-mately only have to make their case if it goes before a jury.Evidence cluesThe ? ling also referred to a calendar “that showed that ‘BB’ received steroids in December 2001.”Referring to a question as to whether Anderson talked to Bonds about or gave him human growth hormone, Bonds said no, according to the ? ling’s account of his grand jury testimony. “The government will show at trial only that Bonds’ answer to that portion of the question is know-ingly false,” the motion said. The latest details to emerge in the ever-widening baseball dop-ing scandal came just a day after Roger Clemens, one of the great-est pitchers in Major League Baseball history, clashed under oath with his former trainer at a congressional hearing over the trainer’s claims he injected Cle-mens with illegal performance-enhancing drugs.A US federal judge in San Francisco is expected to hold a hearing on Bonds’ motion to dis-miss the case on February 29.AgenciesBarry BondsSuns use late charge to burn MavsPHOENIX: Amare Stou-demire and Leandro Barbosa both scored 26 points and the Phoenix Suns used an 11-2 run late in the fourth quarter to defeat the depleted Dallas Mavericks 109-97 on Thursday.Steve Nash added 24 points and 13 rebounds for the Suns.Dirk Nowitzki scored 36 points and grabbed 12 re-bounds for Dallas while Jason Terry had 29 points.Dallas trailed by two at 93-91 with 4:21 remaining when Phoenix broke the game open.Boris Diaw hit a jumper and Stoudemire followed with a dunk and a free throw to make it 98-91.Barbosa’s lay-up increased the lead to 100-91 before Nowitzki connected with 3:05 left.Another jumper by Diaw and a Barbosa lay-up put Phoenix ? rmly in control with a 104-93 advantage with 1:51 remaining.“They had an extra gear and we couldn’t get there,” Dal-las coach Avery Johnson told reporters.“They just had a better fourth quarter. We battled for four quarters but just didn’t have that ? nishing kick.”The Mavericks were playing without Josh Howard, Jerry Stackhouse and Devin Harris, out out injured. In Chicago, Kirk Hinrich scored 24 points and four other Chicago players fin-ished in double figures as the Bulls handed the MiamiHeat a ninth consecutive loss with a 99-92 victory.Joe Smith had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulls, Thabo Sefolosha had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Tyrus Thomas had 10 points and 12 rebounds.Andres Nocioni was also in double ? gures for Chicago, scoring 18 points. The Heat got 30 points from Dywane Wade had 30 and 23 from newly acquired Shawn Marion.AgenciesFIFA opposes EPL expansion abroad‘New York’ sails inThe yacht “New York”, one of 10 boats competing in the

The rich Premier League is trying to get richer and wants to expand the importance of that league,” the head of world soccer’s governing body told the BBC on Thursday.“This does not take into con-sideration the fans of the clubs and it gives the impression that they just want to go on tour to make some money.”England’s top 20 clubs have agreed to play league matches overseas from the 2010-11 sea-son under a proposal unveiled by the Premier League last week. The ? xtures, planned to be staged over one weekend in January in cities which had bid for the hosting rights, would extend the league season to 39Milan rallies round injured RonaldoMILAN: AC Milan has yet to commit to a new contract for injured striker Ronaldo after the Brazilian was ruled out for at least nine months followingknee surgery. The 31-year-old’s deal runs out in June and although the European champion has said it hopes he will play for the team again, Ronaldo has not been guaranteed a fresh contract. He underwent surgery on his left knee in Paris on Thursday after being carried off in Wednesday’s 1-1 Serie A draw with Livorno, only his sixth appearance in an already injury-plagued season. The three-time World Player of the Year sustained a similar injury while with Inter Milan in 2000.“We hope this very sad im-age on Wednesday is not the last we see of him on the ? eld,” Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani told Friday’s Gazzetta Dello Sport.“Ronaldo is still not 32 and even if I don’t comment be-cause I am not a doctor, I hope he returns to play and that he does so in our jersey. He’s using me as an example of how to get through this and make something of his life.“I know Dwain and he is full of remorse and pain. He did wrong, but I’ve dealt with a lot of people who are not nice, they’re dishonest and they steal ― Dwain’s not like that.”Conte also believes Cham-bers could have a role in the UKA’s ? ght against drugs and criticized the ? ak the British sprinter has taken.Chambers example“Why won’t UK Athletics useDwain as an example of what not to do, like he’s offered?” Conte said. “He’s an eyewitness, he was at the scene.“He could be a major positive in the ? ght against doping, but instead there’s all this hate, hate, hate.“What sort of example is that? I know for a fact that behind the scenes Dwain has influenced others (about not doping).“It might not be to his bene? t for me to say this, but I respect Dwain Chambers as a man,” Conte said.“I honestly think he will go down as a historic figure because he’s bigger than all this ridicule and hostility. He has more internal forti-tude than the lot of them (at UKA).”Chambers, who was stripped of the European 100 metrestitle he won in 2002, returned to athletics in 2006 and was a member of Britain’s gold-medal winning 4x100 relay team at the European championships that year.UKA made clear its reluc-tance in picking him for the world indoor championships in Valencia, but said it had no choice after the 29-year-old convincingly won the 60 metres last weekend.“He has lived the life of a drug cheat and is more quali-fied than anyone to speak about the issue, but the UK has turned its back on him,” Conte said.“He’s trying to make amends and I guarantee that if he had his time over, he would not take drugs. He did it because he thought it was the only way.”Agencies包含各类专业文献、应用写作文书、中学教育、行业资料、高等教育、各类资格考试、幼儿教育、小学教育、71[中国日报].chinadaily_pdf_等内容。
